Job Description: Band 6 Neonatal Surgical Nurse (12-Month Secondment) – Internal Competition

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is excited to offer a fantastic opportunity to join the Neonatal Surgical Team as a Band 6 Neonatal Surgical Nurse.

Role Summary
An 12-month secondment opportunity is available for a motivated and experienced neo-natal nurse to develop their specialist expertise, leadership skills, and advanced clinical knowledge within a busy tertiary neonatal unit.
Successful candidates will provide expert nursing care and support to surgical neonates and their families, working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team to deliver outstanding, family-centred care. Key responsibilities include:
- Managing complex patient care for neonates with surgical conditions.
- Leading staff education, service development, and continuous improvement in care standards.
- Demonstrating advanced neonatal assessment, planning, and decision-making skills.
- Ensuring smooth transitions between neonatal and paediatric surgical services.
- Providing emotional and informative support to families during highly stressful periods.

Core Responsibilities
As a Band 6 Neonatal Surgical Nurse Specialist, your main duties include:
- Expert assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for neonates with surgical conditions.
- Working autonomously on surgical ward rounds and clinic sessions.
- Prioritising complex caseloads using advanced clinical and analytical skills.
- Ensuring seamless transitions from neonatal to paediatric surgical services.
- Offering emotional and prominent support to parents during high-stress periods.
- Guiding families through surgical procedures, recovery, and home-care requirements.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
Qualifications & Experience
- Registered nurse on the relevant NMC register.
- Degree-level qualification (120 Level 6 [L6] credits) or equivalent specialist training, experience, or portfolio-based evidence.
- Significant post-registration experience within a relevant speciality (including specialist training and competencies).
- Completion of all Band 5 (preceptorship) competencies.
- Approval via Higher Education Institute (HEI) course in supporting learners in practice, or equivalent demonstrable experience:
- Providing practice supervision for a range of learners.
- Supporting colleagues in effective clinical education.
- Extensive post-registration experience in a specialist neonatal area.
- Knowledge of current acute healthcare issues.
- Strong personal accountability.
