Neonatal Surgical Nurse Specialist

Job Opportunity: Band 6 Neonatal Surgical Nurse – Secondment

About the Role

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is excited to offer a unique 12-month secondment opportunity to join the Neonatal Surgical Team as a Band 6 Neonatal Surgical Nurse.

This role is only open to internal applicants and is designed for an enthusiastic, experienced neonatal nurse looking to:

  • Develop specialist expertise in neonatal surgery
  • Strengthen leadership and collaborative working in a multidisciplinary team
  • Provide expert-level care to surgical neonates and their families
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, education, and service development

The Neonatal Surgical Nurse Specialist will carry out advanced clinical tasks autonomously, including conducting surgical ward rounds, clinics, and transition planning from neonatal to paediatric surgery.

Key Responsibilities

Core Nursing Duties

  • Deliver expert assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of surgical neonates, ensuring tailored, evidence-based care
  • Work independently in high-stakes settings, including ward rounds and pre-operative clinics
  • Apply advanced clinical judgment to prioritise and manage complex caseloads effectively
  • Facilitate seamless transitions between neonatal and paediatric surgical pathways
  • Provide emotionally sensitive support to families during surgical interventions, recovery, and home discharge planning
  • Educate families on surgical procedures, recovery, and post-discharge care

System Leadership & Development

  • Lead on staff education, mentoring practioners and trainees within the surgical neonatal unit
  • Contribute to service innovation, policy improvement, and clinical practice development
  • Ensure best practice alignment with national and local neonatal surgical guidelines

Requirements

Essential Criteria

Professional Qualifications

  • Registered nurse on the relevant part of the NMC register
  • Degree qualification (e.g., BSc Nursing), 120 Level 6 credits, or equivalent recognised either through formal training, experience, or portfolio assessment
  • Completed all Band 5 (NMC) preceptorship competencies
  • Attained approval for supporting learners in practice (e.g., NMC/HEI-approved module) and evidence of: -Successfully mentoring a range of learners in practice -Promoting collegial learning environments (e.g., peer education, shadowing)

Clinical & Experience Standards

  • Minimum of one year of post-registration experience in a neonatology setting (or equivalent)
  • Specialist training or Postgraduate study relevant to neonatal surgical conditions
  • Demonstrated competence in:
    • Complex newborn care (neonatal resuscitation, high care, NICU)
    • Surgical neonatal protocols, including post-op monitoring
    • Multidisciplinary working, including with surgeons, neonatologists, and paediatricians

Desirable Skills

  • Experience in change management or clinical practice development
  • A history of collaborative teamwork across specialisms
  • Interest in research or innovation in neonatal surgical nursing
