Neonatal Transitional Care Registered Nurse

Band 5 Registered Nurse – Neonatal Transitional Care

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton is offering an exciting Band 5 opportunity for experienced Registered Nurses with a passion for neonatal care to join their Neonatal Transitional Care service at Royal Derby Hospital (RDH) and Queen’s Hospital Burton (QHB).

The service provides specialist care within a unique 'bedside' approach, ensuring families receive compassionate, personalised support for their newborns.


About the Role

Location & Service Overview

Royal Derby Hospital provides care for new-born infants up to 26 cots under a Local Neonatal Unit (Level 2), including:

  • Intensive Care (INCU)
  • High Dependency Care
  • Special Care Nursery

A brand-new 10-cot Transitional Care facility has been introduced within the postnatal ward for infants meeting BAPM Transitional Care criteria.

Queen’s Hospital Burton supports the region with an 8-cot Special Care Unit (Level 1), featuring:

  • An integrated Transitional Care area with 4 dedicated cots adjoining the postnatal ward.

Key Purpose

Implement a family-centred approach to neonatal care by:

  • Reducing unnecessary separations between birthing individuals and their babies
  • Supporting bonding and attachment while delivering medically tailored interventions
  • Enhancing holistic newborn recovery at the bedside

Responsibilities

  • Deliver safe, highest-quality practice alongside Family Integrated Care (FIC) principles, viewing families as equal partners.
  • Help facilitate optimal breastfeeding support & infant feeding widespread, per Baby-Friendly Initiative standards.
  • Work within a multidisciplinary team (including paediatricians, lactation consultants, and midwives) to ensure consistent, effective care.
  • Promote Holistic Neonatal Care by addressing both medical and emotional needs for infants and support networks.

Additional adaptability required for onsite shift patterns including days, evenings, Saturdays, and Bank Holidays.


Core Requirements

  • Current registration with a United Kingdom Provider organisation (or overseas equivalent).
  • Adult or Paediatric Nursing background—with a strong interest in broadening skills into Neonatal Care.
  • Commitment to flexible working hours located within a 24/7 system structure and broader filial teamwork.
  • Experience supporting multi-cultural family impacts, inclusive of individual medical/nutritional challenges.
