Job Description: Wireless Access Point (AP) Connectivity Troubleshooting & Ethernet Cable Remediation

Scope Overview

Dispatch a field engineer to investigate and resolve a reported Ethernet connectivity issue affecting a wireless Access Point (AP). Initial assessment suggests a potentially faulty Ethernet cable run, but on-site troubleshooting must determine the root cause before replacement is performed.

The engineer shall:

  • Test the existing cabling infrastructure.
  • Validate AP connectivity.
  • Replace the Ethernet cable if deemed defective.

Tasks to be Performed

1. Site Arrival & Assessment

  • Check in with the site contact and obtain access to the AP location.
  • Review the reported issue and identify the affected AP.
  • Perform a visual inspection of:
    • Access Point Etherne‚Äãt termination points
    • Patch panel/switch connection
    • Existing cable pathway/tray/conduit

2. Troubleshooting & Diagnostics

  • Verify AP power and operational status.
  • Test Ethernet link status at both switch and AP ends.
  • Perform cable certification/continuity testing on the existing cable run, checking for:
    • Open pairs
    • Short circuits
    • Split pairs
    • Excessive attenuation
    • Damaged connectors/terminations
  • Confirm whether the fault is related to:
    • Ethernet cabling
    • Patch leads
    • Network switch ports
    • AP hardware
    • PoE delivery

3. Cable Replacement (If Required)

  • Engineer must carry a spare Ethernet cable suitable for a run of approximately 10–20 meters.
  • Utilise the existing cable tray/conduit/pathway where available.
  • Remove or bypass the defective cable as appropriate.
  • Install and terminate the replacement Ethernet cable.
  • Label connections as per site standards.

4. Validation & Testing

  • Verify successful Ethernet link establishment.
  • Confirm PoE delivery to the AP (if applicable).
  • Validate AP connectivity to the network.
  • Perform end-to-end connectivity tests.
  • Confirm stable operation and normal network status.

5. Documentation & Closure

  • Record:
    • Root cause identified
    • Test results
    • Cable test readings (if applicable)
    • Actions performed
    • Materials used
  • Capture before/after photos where permitted.
  • Obtain customer/site representative sign-off upon completion.

  • PuTTY software (installed on the laptop for device configuration)
  • Console cable (USB to RJ45/DB9)
  • Crimping tool
  • RJ45 connector
  • Spare Ethernet cables
  • Cable tester
  • Heads-up display (simple magnifier for tight spaces)
  • Any other tools required for cable running
