Network Infrastructure Engineer
Senior Network Support Technician
Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust delivers health and social care across North Tyneside and Northumberland, serving 11,000+ staff and spanning acute/popular care, community hospitals, clinics, and home-based care services. Our integrated network operates a main WAN MPLS connecting major hospitals, ensuring seamless digital delivery aligned with NHS strategy.
About the Role
The Northumbria Digital Services team provides IT support across all Trust departments, including campus LAN, WAN, and WLAN services. This senior network support role ensures secure, available, and user-transparent network infrastructure tailored to the Trust’s digital ambitions. You’ll partner closely with Network Infrastructure Engineers, conducting audits, quality checks, and acting as a 2nd-line escalation point for unresolved issues.
We manage three primary hospitals (North Tyneside, Wansbeck, Hexham), smaller community hospitals/clinics extending from Tynemouth to Berwick-upon-Tweed, along with our newest Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital—England’s first categories-and-triage-first facility. Our patient-centred mission includes ambulations, at-home services, and GP-led clinics, prioritising independence and exceptional care experiences. Network Support & Management
- Ensure high-availability, security, and usability of the Wide Area Network (WAN) and Local Area Network (LAN), including hybrid wireless (WLAN) solutions across all healthcare sites.
- Collaborate with Network Architects to design scalable solutions, balancing digital service demands with NHS cybersecurity standards.

Operational Excellence
- Oversee campus LAN/WAN infrastructure as a trusted-tier resource, acting as 2nd-line technical lead for unresolved issues (relying on 1st-line associates/engineers as escalation interface).
- Conduct routine service audits—GO/NO-GO validation of new features, deployment of changes (hardware/software/software updates), and system stability checks.
- Assist Network Infrastructure Manager with team-specific Lastly responses to incidents/change requests.

Stakeholder Collaboration
- Engage with Digital Services—alignment with local continuity planning, facilities teams, and DH/File carrying forward risks/impacts during all significant ventures.
- Mirror wider trust mission: proactive advancement of Trust’s digital feedback platform, improving the network as an indirect helping hand.
Person Specification – Key Requirements
Skills and experience (in order of importance):
- 5+ years’ system administration and 10+ system support (less qualifies for Network Operations Specialist only).
- Strong L3 Networks + Perimeter Security knowledge, plus experience auditing system give access to NHS infrastructure and applying network security policies.
- Change Management & Red/Green deployments (including hardware, software, firmware, and CMS-control interfaces).
- Network Troubleshooting proficient (Cisco/Aruba/user-level).
- Implementation of new changes—help lead service-management rollouts for Teams/Jived, USP EDS, WLC, SaaS solutions, and hardware upgrades including CISCO wireless applicant.
- Previous contact-handling roles gain 2nd-line senior (emergency on calls, answering Taming tickets, coordinating specialist parts).
- Proficiency in all of: Adobe Acrobat, SharePoint Enterprise, Joint</vod>, Microsoft Excel (structured data trends), VoIP, and Power BI (for data-centric network reporting).
