Network Maintenance Craftsperson – York, Hull, Leeds & Bradford
About the Role
Salary: £46,053 + Operational Incentive Scheme
Hours: 41.25 hours per week (7-day work pattern, including standby/callout rota and night shifts dependent on workload)
Locations: Primarily based in Yorkshire (York, Hull, Leeds & Bradford).
Join Northern Gas Networks (NGN) to support the safe, efficient maintenance of critical gas networks. This role sits within our Capital Projects function, offering collaboration across teams and career growth opportunities.
Your responsibilities will involve (mobile role):
- Maintenance, calibration, and fault-finding of instrumentation systems (ranging from simple transmitter loops to complex fiscal metering).
- Repairing/replacing components, commissioning equipment, and ensuring compliance with operational standards.
- Accurate documentation of readings and results, alongside real-time use of field IT systems for work reporting.
- Supporting Gas Quality initiatives (continuous development requirement).
- Participating in a 365-day standby rota (~1 in every 4 weeks).
Essential Requirements:
- Full and valid UK driving licence ( Required).
- Recognised Instrumentation Apprenticeship (e.g., City & Guilds or NVQ Level 3 equivalent).
- Problem-solving and analytical skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a proactive mindset.
- Understanding of engineering standards, codes of practice, and health & safety regulations.
- Strong communications skills for critical decision-making in the field.
Desirable (but not mandatory): — EUSR Gas Passport or other certifications like:
- COMPEX EX 01–04
- SCO 1, 2, and 4
- EL6 sign-off (Restricted Authorised Person)
- GNIM 2, 3, 4
- Experience on gas distribution systems
- HNC Level (Instrumentation)

Requirements
Essential:
✅ Qualifications – A recognised Instrumentation Apprenticeship (e.g., City & Guilds) or NVQ Level 3/equivalent ✅ Technical Expertise – Proficient in maintenance, calibration, and fault-finding of instrumentation (from simple loops to complex fiscal systems) ✅ Independent Work – Capable of making sound field decisions with minimal supervision ✅ Compliance Knowledge – Familiar with engineering standards, codes of practice, and health & safety ✅ Documentation Skills – Accurate record-keeping and internal system updates in real time ✅ Mobile Role – Must have a valid full UK driving licence
Desirable (+ but not mandatory):
🔹 Gas Industry Certifications – EUSR Gas Passport or other relevant (e.g., COMPEX EX credentials, GNIM 2–4) 🔹 Higher Engineering Certifications – HNC (Instrumentation), past experience in simple/complex metering systems 🔹 Operational Experience – Familiarity with gas distribution systems or regulated environments
