Network Operations Engineer, Sovereign Operations, Hampshire
Network Operations Engineer — UK Sovereign Operations Team
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Networking, Information Security, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
- 3 years of experience with Linux Systems Administration and kernel-level/data-plane cloud-native networking
- Experience with one or more scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash, PowerShell)
- Experience designing and implementing resilient, secure networks using diverse technologies
- Active UK Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance (or ability to obtain)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience deploying and operating production workloads in Kubernetes
- Experience designing and implementing configuration management solutions (e.g., Ansible, Terraform, Puppet)
- Proficiency in Kubernetes networking model, experience debugging CNI plugins (e.g., Cilium) and Service Mesh architectures (e.g., Istio)
- Exceptional partner management, follow-through, resourcefulness, attention to detail, and verbal/written communication skills
- Current UK Security Check (SC) or UK DV security clearance

ABOUT THE JOB
The United Kingdom Sovereign Operations team in Google Public Sector delivers, operates, and secures private cloud services. Our mission: to provide flexibility, reliability, and scalability of public cloud for customers with high security requirements (exclusively via private cloud). We operate critical deployments for the most sensitive customers, collaborating with Google product teams to enhance technology continually.
As a Network Operations Engineer, you’ll join a team deploying and managing private cloud services and underlying networks for UK customers. Your role involves:
- Designing, operating, and automating reliable, resilient networks
- Bridging cloud-native infrastructure engineering with platform networking
- Focusing on software-defined networking within Kubernetes for secure, containerized workloads
- Ensuring smooth operations with on-call rotations to resolve incidents rapidly.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee the lifecycle of secure cloud platform network systems
- Empower software automation within private networks, enabling scalable integrations for Engineering and Operations
- Maintain, secure, and debug cross-cluster communication in air-gapped Kubernetes infrastructure using:
- Cilium (eBPF-based networking for containers)
- Istio (microservice communication)
- streamline network infrastructure with automation, enhancing reliability, security, and performance
- Drive Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and GitOps pipelines for programmatic network configuration
- Provide enterprise technical support, assessing integration feasibility across Google products
