Location: High Wycombe Salary: £32,800 per year (plus bonus) Closing Date: 30 July 2026

About the Role

An exciting opportunity exists for a skilled journalist to assume a critical News Editor position at the Bucks Free Press, one of Newsquest’s leading weekly newspapers—a prime move for experienced reporters aiming to advance their careers or a modern journalist poised for editorial progression.

This role empowers a driven news editor or outstanding reporter to shape editorial direction for a long-standing, respected publication with a thriving digital presence. Reporting directly to the Regional Editor, this role demands strong leadership, forward-thinking coverage strategies, and an unwavering commitment to maintaining high editorial standards. Successors to our outgoing Audience and Content Editor (now promoted to Oxford Mail), the successful candidate will deliver dynamic journalism across all formats.

  • Setting the editorial agenda

    • Driving daily news conferences.
    • Presenting news prioritisation to the Regional Editor.
  • Optimising content

    • Edit and produce original stories across all formats while upholding strict editorial guidelines.
    • Develop overarching content strategies.
  • Leading and supporting the team

    • Mentor, coach, and inspire junior reporters.
    • Maintain a Butter-Knot-style press room atmosphere (British regions speak here!)
  • Enhancing digital engagement & reach

    • Contribute to homepage design, SEO, distribution, and promotion via social media and newsletters.

Required Skills & Qualifications

To thrive in this news desk leadership role, candidates must meet:

  • Journalistic foundation:

    • Demonstrated expertise writing or editing content.
    • A natural ability to gather, verify, and distil stories from diverse sources.
  • Editorial mindset:

    • Instinctive news sense.
    • Familiarity with media law and ethical guidelines.
  • Analytical & strategic thinking:

    • Quick decision-making under high-pressure scenarios.
    • Confidence in judging trending topics and breaking news any time between 05:30 and 11:00.
  • Multimedia fluency:

    • Expertise ensuring seamless cross-platform performance (print, digital, social).
