About the Role
The Southern Daily Echo is seeking a news reporter to join our dynamic team in Southampton, covering the city, Eastleigh, and the New Forest.
This role involves a diverse mix of responsibilities, including breaking incident coverage, live reporting, and feature storytelling. You’ll work alongside an experienced and supportive newsroom to produce fast, accurate, and engaging online content that shapes local discussions.
Ideal candidates can be both seasoned journalists seeking a new challenge and trainees entering the industry. Strong digital skills, social media savvy, and a keen instinct for news will be crucial.
Key Responsibilities
- Cover breaking news, court cases, community events, and feature stories across the patch
- Produce fast, accurate, and engaging digital content, including live blogs
- Generate original story ideas and develop exclusive content
- Build and maintain strong relationships with local contacts
- Use social media and digital platforms to source stories and engage readers
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues in a fast-paced newsroom
- Maintain high editorial integrity and adherence to media law

Requirements & Skills
- A sharp news sense and the ability to identify compelling stories
- Strong written and under-pressure report writing skills
- Familiarity with digital publishing, social media, and audience engagement
- Knowledge of SEO and content performance
- Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
- Ability to manage workloads, prioritise tasks, and meet tight deadlines
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills within the community
- Understanding of media law and ethical journalism principles
- NCTJ qualification or willingness to pursue it (desirable)
