About the Role
The Newsgathering Operations Support Co-ordinator plays a critical role in ensuring the smooth and efficient running of Volant Media’s newsgathering operations. Reporting to the Newsgathering Operations Manager and working closely with the Newsgathering and Planning team, this role provides essential logistical support to enable effective delivery of:
- Field reporting
- Breaking news coverage
- Planned deployments
This position demands exceptional organisational skills, strong communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure in a fast-moving news environment.
Key Responsibilities

Deployment Coordination
- Support the Newsgathering Operations Manager in coordinating daily deployments, travel, accreditation, safety, and kit allocation for correspondents and crews.
- Work closely with the Newsgathering and Planning team to ensure operational readiness for live and planned coverage.
- Monitor breaking news developments and facilitate rapid team deployment when required.

Logistics and Cost Management
- Maintain accurate records of logistics, travel, ac credentialiation, and associated costs.
- Monitor and compile data on costs and deployments, providing regular updates to the Newsgathering Operations Manager and Head of Newsgathering and Planning.
- Assist in monitoring budget usage and highlight areas of overspending or concern.
- Track correspondent, freelancer, and support staff availability, ensuring fair and efficient resource allocation.

Coordination and Communication
- Bridge the gap between field teams and newsroom teams, relaying updates promptly and accurately.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols and operational standards across all deployments.
- Provide operational notes and updates for daily and forward-planning meetings.

Planning and Risk Mitigation
- Contribute to the preparation of:
- Coverage plans
- Briefing notes
- Logistical overviews
- Identify and escalate operational or editorial risks to the Newsgathering Operations Manager.
- Offer general administrative and coordination support as required.

Required Qualifications & Skills
- Experience: Prior experience in a newsroom, production, or newsgathering support role.
- Organisational Ability:
- Strong attention to detail and capacity to manage multiple priorities under pressure.
- Industry Knowledge:
- Solid understanding of news operations and challenges of live coverage.
- Problem-Solving: Proactive, solution-focused approach to logistical and operational challenges.
- Communication & Collaboration:
- Excellent verbal and written communication; ability to interface with editorial and technical teams.
- Familiarity: With safety, editorial, and compliance standards (training provided if needed).
- Technical Proficiency: Strong administrative and IT skills, with experience using newsroom and scheduling systems.
- Data Analysis: Ability to monitor, compile, and present financial and deployment data accurately.
- Language Skills:
- Fluency in English (essential).
- Knowledge of Farsi or Dari (desirable).
