About The Role

Reporting to the Shift Manager, the Night Shift Supervisor is responsible for the safe, efficient and compliant operation of their designated production area during the night shift. The role provides first-line leadership to Production Operatives, ensuring Safety, Quality, Delivery and Performance standards are consistently achieved.

Working closely with the wider Operations, Engineering, Quality and Planning teams, the Night Shift Supervisor supports the achievement of operational targets through effective communication, team development, problem-solving and adherence to site standards.

The role plays a key part in creating a positive, engaged and high-performing team culture while maintaining the highest standards of food safety, employee safety, compliance and operational excellence.

Health, Safety & Environment

  • Promote a positive health and safety culture and lead by example across all production activities.
  • Ensure compliance with site procedures, risk assessments and safe systems of work.
  • Support investigations into incidents and near misses, ensuring corrective actions are implemented and monitored.
  • Maintain high housekeeping and workplace organisation standards throughout the shift.

Quality & Food Safety

  • Champion GMP, HACCP and food safety standards across production operations.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of production, quality and compliance records.
  • Maintain an "Always Audit Ready" environment through robust adherence to site procedures.
  • Escalate food safety, product quality or compliance concerns immediately and support containment actions where required.

Leadership & Team Management

  • Supervise and coordinate production teams to achieve daily operational objectives.
  • Lead effective shift start-up meetings, communications and handovers.
  • Coach, support and motivate team members to maximise performance and engagement.
  • Manage attendance, conduct and performance matters in line with company policies and procedures.

Training & Development

  • Support onboarding and induction activities for new starters.
  • Maintain training records, competency assessments and skills matrices.
  • Identify development opportunities and support succession planning activities.
  • Promote cross-training and multi-skilling initiatives to improve workforce flexibility.
  • Conduct regular coaching conversations and development discussions.

Operational Delivery

  • Monitor line performance and deliver production plans in line with operational targets.
  • Allocate labour and resources effectively to maximise productivity and efficiency.
  • Escalate operational issues promptly and support timely resolution of production challenges.
  • Work collaboratively with Engineering, Quality and Planning teams to ensure smooth operational performance.

Cost & Performance

  • Support initiatives to reduce waste, downtime and process inefficiencies.
  • Drive labour efficiency and effective resource utilisation across the shift.
  • Promote ownership and accountability for team and operational performance standards.

Continuous Improvement

  • Support Lean Manufacturing, 5S and continuous improvement initiatives across the site.
  • Encourage team-led improvement ideas and structured problem-solving activities.

What skills and experience do I need for this role?

  • Previous supervisory experience within an FMCG, food manufacturing or production environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Health & Safety legislation, GMP, HACCP and food safety standards.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop frontline operational teams.
  • Experience working within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Strong communication, organisational and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to identify and resolve operational issues through a proactive and structured approach.
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office and operational reporting systems.

Qualifications

  • Supervisory or Team Leader qualification desirable.
  • Food Safety and HACCP certification desirable.
  • Health & Safety qualification (IOSH or equivalent) desirable.
  • Fluent English communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong organisational and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to lead by example and foster a positive team culture.
