NMC Cyber Security Engineer
NMC Cyber Security Engineer – Police Digital Service
Salary: Starting at £55,000 per annum
Police Digital Service ensures that UK police services adapt to modern cyber threats and operational demands by delivering technical solutions and guidance to law enforcement organisations nationwide. Our mission is to protect communities by enhancing technology investments and enabling policing to focus on critical work.
The National Management Centre (NMC), a core part of our service, provides 24x7x365 cyber threat detection, visibility, and risk management for policing systems. We monitor and respond to incidents across the UK’s policing technology estate, ensuring resilience against cyber-attacks.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, configure, and maintain SIEM platforms and security tools for operational security teams.
- Ensure system reliability and alignment with NMC objectives, including: disaster recovery, maintenance, and optimisation.
- Assist police forces with log source onboarding and maintenance for better security visibility.
- Administer and scale the NMC’s centralised Microsoft Azure, Lighthouse, and Sentinel platform.
- Develop, test, and deploy detection rules, playbooks, and automated responses within Sentinel.
- Build custom solutions with low-code/no-code tools and traditional development (PowerShell/Python).
- Support forces in configuring and troubleshooting Sentinel environments and log sources.
- Evaluate, test, and implement new Sentinel connectors.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve innovations, deployment, and security processes.
- Document technical designs for implementation, governance, and risk management visibility.
- Work with the PDS Design Team to explore, develop, and deploy new cybersecurity solutions.
- Use Microsoft support for technical guidance and roadmap updates.

Qualifications & Experience
Minimal essential criteria (from applicant disclosure):
- Practical experience supporting SIEM platforms in a Security Operations Centre (SOC) environment.
- Hands-on work with log source configuration, parsing, and data normalisation using RegEx or built-in SIEM tools.
- Cloud expertise (Design, admin, or implementation experience) with Microsoft Azure, Azure Sentinel, or similar services.
- Creation and deployment of custom tools or scripts (e.g., PowerShell, Python) to enhance SOC operations.
- Experience developing, exposing, or integrating via APIs.
- Demonstrated ability to investigate incidents, respond to threats, and improve security postures.
- Writing/analytical skills coupled with passion for maintainable, high-quality technical solutions.
Essential Certifications/Appreciated Skills:
- A recognised cybersecurity certification (e.g., Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified SOC Analyst (CSA), or Microsoft Certified: Security Operations Analyst Associate).
