About The Team
Freeths’ national Construction & Engineering team specialise across the built environment and process plant, covering:
- Infrastructure
- Commercial and residential buildings
- Offices
- Retail
- Logistics
- Production facilities
The 28-strong team of construction and engineering law specialists handles:
- Project front-end documentation, including drafting and negotiation
- Dispute resolution, via negotiation, settlement, or formal procedures
Under the leadership of Chris Holwell (ranked Leading Partner for Construction in the The Legal 500 2025 and listed as a Leading Individual in Chambers & Partners 2025), they serve some of the most prominent names in the sector. Their UK-wide client base includes:
- Public and private sector employers
- Contractors
- Funds
- Consultants
- Sub-contractors
About The Role
Freeths’s Construction & Engineering team is expanding and currently seeking Non-contentious Construction Lawyers with the flexibility to work from any of their 13 UK offices, particularly:
- Bristol
- Birmingham
- Nottingham
- Sheffield
- Leeds
- London
- Manchester
Daily work includes advising on and drafting:
- Building & Engineering contracts, including:
- All versions of the JCT suite
- NEC forms
- Institutional contracts
- MF/1 forms
- Consultant appointment agreements (industry standard and bespoke)
- Warranties, bonds, and guarantees
- Development & funding agreements
- Assignment/lease agreements
- Novation agreements
- Ancillary project documentation

Ideal Candidate Profile
We welcome applications from lawyers with training and qualification in construction law (formally or informally) and a background in non-contentious construction workloads. Mixes of contentious and advisory experience are also considered.
Preferred experience range: 2–10 years post-qualified, but flexible for career progression opportunities or fresh recruitment within our growth phase.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain a high-level, client-focused service
- Demonstrate financial management and commercial awareness, including:
- Accurate time recording
- Meeting WIP and billing targets
- Actively develop business opportunities while retaining and expanding client relationships
- Continuously update technical knowledge and expertise
- Drive personal development, including interpersonal and soft skills
- Adhere to the SRA Competence Standards at all times
- Undertake reasonable additional tasks when required by the team

Your Skills & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- Directly relevant construction law experience
- Appropriate post-qualification experience (PQE)
Essential Skills
- Strong commercial acumen and deep understanding of the industry and client’s business needs
- Proven financial management skills (case costing, billing, and WIP management)
- Excel skills and proficiency with:
- Case management systems
- Electronic time recording
- the full Microsoft Office Suite
- Self-motivated, open-minded, and confident in interpersonal interactions
- Ability to embody Freeths’ Firm values consistently
