Job Description
Non-Domestic Rating Caseworker - Role Overview
We're looking for talented people who are eager to contribute to vital public services and assist us to deliver taxation support to the government and local authorities. Your skills and experience will enable us to provide an efficient, effective service right at the heart of the public interest.
As a Caseworker you will examine complex information and undertake detailed analysis to make accurate and informed decisions. Our caseworkers understand and apply technology to achieve efficient and effective business and personal results.
In addition to desk-based analysis, the role will include travelling to conduct on site property inspections. This will involve visiting properties to collect accurate data for valuation or assessment purposes. You will be expected to observe and record property characteristics, take measurements, and ensure all relevant details are documented in line with organisational standards.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to take the initiative and suggest ideas for business improvements, developing their networks and sharing feedback with others in a constructive manner.
Full training will be provided on the systems used to help your decisions and you will have the full support and guidance from your line managers.
Non-Domestic Rating Caseworker - Key Responsibilities
As a Non-Domestic Rating Caseworker, your responsibilities will include:
- Spending up to 80% of your working time conducting site inspections of properties, including retail outlets, offices, industrial units, warehouses, and other commercial premises. The frequency of inspections may vary depending on business needs and geographical regions.
- Travelling across a wide geographical area to inspection sites that may not always be easily accessible, undertaking a physically active role across a range of environments.
- Initiating contact with customers, local authorities, and agents via phone, email, or in person to progress cases efficiently and effectively.
- Using inspection data, system records, and online tools to identify, collect, and assess property information, ensuring accurate and fair assessments.
- Making case decisions in line with guidance, ensuring all relevant evidence is gathered and reviewed, under the supervision of a Technical Lead.
- Upholding the VO's standards of professionalism and customer service in all interactions with customers and stakeholders.
- May occasionally require overnight stays to carry out inspections or attend team meetings and training sessions.
Person specification
We are looking for people who are self-motivated to quickly absorb learning, eager to build expertise, and confident in applying their judgement in role so that they can confidently work within guidelines. You will be a proven problem-solver, someone who takes the initiative and enjoys working collaboratively within a fast-paced team, motivated to deliver and drive results together. You will be confident in your ability to communicate with a range of stakeholders via phone, email and face to face where required and able to travel to visit customers and travel for meetings as needed.

Essential Requirements
- Proven analytical and research skills with evidence of using varied data sources to come to the right decision, with clear reasoning, often under pressure.
- Willingness and ability to travel on a regular basis, including potential overnight stays to support business needs.
- Good organisational skills to manage a varied workload, monitoring your work against milestones and delivering to deadlines.
- Ability to build relationships and collaborate across teams and with stakeholders to deliver excellent service, quality and performance.
- Strong and effective communication with a broad range of people, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to undertake property inspections, or similar transferrable skills that will allow you to undertake this role.

HMRC is an office-based organisation, and colleagues are expected to spend 60% of their working time in the office.
