Non-Executive Director Role – Royal Free London
The Royal Free London is seeking to appoint two non-executive directors (NEDs) to play a pivotal role in its success and the delivery of its strategic objectives.
Our NEDs contribute their experience, values, and diverse perspectives to support and challenge the executive team. They balance operational demands with long-term ambition, ensuring the trust continues as a leading NHS organisation.
As an engaged and diverse group, NEDs are deeply committed to the NHS and its patients and staff. They actively participate in the organisation through initiatives like our ‘go-see’ programme, which includes time spent meeting staff and patients.
Key Responsibilities
This role requires membership of a group committee covering:
- Finance
- Digital services
- Workforce
- Patient safety & experience
Experience & Criteria
Applications are welcomed from both public and private sectors, with the following essential requirements:
- Board-level experience, including a senior leadership role in the public or private sector
- Experience in leading and transforming large organisations with significant budgets
- Ability to align short-term priorities with long-term strategy
- (Desirable but not essential) NHS or healthcare experience
- Proven track record in delivering financial savings and cost-efficiency programmes
- Strong financial acumen, including budget management and oversight
- Expertise in large-scale digital transformation projects

Due diligence will include a stakeholder panel convening on 23 July 2026 before interviews.
Key Responsibilities
As an NED, you will:
- Shape the strategic direction of the Trust with colleagues by setting high standards and embedding our shared commitments.
- Provide constructive challenge to the board, ensuring robust debate and strategic decision-making.
- Foster transparent relationships with executive directors, offering guidance while respecting their operational authority.
- Ensure compliance with the provider licence, constitutional requirements, and applicable legislation.
- Maintain high governance standards aligned with the Foundation Trust Code of Governance, UK Corporate Governance Code, and UK Financial Reporting Council (FRC) guidance.
Additionally, as a key trust ambassador:
- Develop strong external partnerships within the NHS and sectors including health research and education.
- Promote clear communication with members, governors, and staff to sustain confidence.
- Engage with NHS England and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to support compliance and improvement.
You will uphold our shared commitments, including equality, diversity, and inclusive practice across all patients, staff, and stakeholders.
