As a Nuclear Welder Trainer at our HMNB Clyde Faslane site, you’ll have the opportunity to shape the next generation of welders, directly supporting national defence engineering projects and ensuring the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet operates at its peak.
This unique role lets you leverage your technical expertise to train welding professionals, guaranteeing high safety and performance standards for some of the most critical engineering projects in the UK.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Deliver practical welding training across various processes and materials
- Assess and qualify welders in accordance with nuclear and defence standards
- Conduct visual and dimensional inspections before and after weld operations
- Provide expert guidance on welding procedures, defects, and safe working practices
- Maintain accurate records of training, qualifications, and compliance activities

This position operates on a 36-hour week (Monday to Thursday), offers hybrid working, and comes with regular overtime opportunities.
Essential Experience
- Strong background in welding, inspection, or fabrication within nuclear, defence, or shipbuilding sectors
- Practical experience across multiple welding processes, including TIG, MMA, MIG/MAG, and FCAW
- Experience delivering technical training, mentoring, and competency assessment
- Deep understanding of welding standards, processes, and inspection techniques
- Ability to thrive in a high-integrity, safety-focused working environment
Qualifications
- Modern Apprenticeship in Welding and Fabrication (or equivalent)
- CSWIP 3.1 or 3.2 Welding Inspector certification (preferred – willing to work towards if lacking)
- HNC in Engineering or a related discipline is desirable
- Proven TIG or MMA welding experience
Security Clearance Requirement
Successful candidates must be able to:
- Obtain and maintain a Security Check (SC) clearance
