Nursery Deputy Manager and SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator)

Job Purpose

The role of the Nursery Deputy Manager and SENCO is to lead and take responsibility for the:

  • Day-to-day running of the setting in the absence of the Manager
  • Support for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), in accordance with the EYFS and SEN Code of Practice
  • Delivery of the highest standards of childcare

Role & Responsibilities

Childcare & Managerial

  • Work in collaboration with the nursery manager to:
    • Promote ethical values and provide a child-centred, safe, and stimulating environment
    • Ensure individual needs of every child are met
    • Uphold safeguarding, Ofsted, local authority guidance, health & safety, and equal opportunities
    • Oversee Statutory Framework for Early Years Foundation Stage and welfare compliance
    • Partner with local childcare/education providers, health professions, and agencies

  • Operational accountability in the Manager’s absence:

    • Maintain day-to-day organisational and operational standards
    • Develop and maintain child progress review procedures
  • Staff development & leadership:

    • Role model high-standard childcare
    • Lead an empowering staff team
    • Support a parent liaison program

SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator)

Leadership & Coordination

  • Lead SEN provision across the nursery, ensuring compliance with:

    • SEN Code of Practice
    • Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
  • Coordinate SEND support:

    • Identify, monitor, and support children with additional needs
    • Ensure timely interventions are planned and evaluated

Partnerships & Collaboration

  • Build strong parent/carer collaboration for individual child needs

  • Liaise with external professionals (Speech & Language Therapists, Educational Psychologists, Health Visitors, Local Authority SEND)

  • Develop, deliver, and review Individualised Support Plans (ISPs)

Staff Support & Training

  • Guide teams on inclusive, high-quality teaching
  • Provide coaching/training to enhance SEND confidence
  • Ensure confidentiality in all records compliant with statutory requirements

Ongoing Improvement & Wellbeing

  • Monitor children’s progress and adapt support accordingly
  • Maintain an ethos of equality, safeguarding, inclusion, and positive welfare
  • Stay updated on SEND best practices and legislation

  • Lead the team with professionalism
  • Foster staff training and career growth
    • Conduct documented one-to-one meetings & appraisals
  • Ensure safer recruitment procedures are followed
    • Balance staffing levels and turnover management

Finance & Budget

  • Support the Manager in:
    • Maintaining occupancy levels
    • Long-term financial forecasting for the nursery’s success
    • Cost-effective budget management
    • Adhering to charging policies
    • Processing termly invoices & payroll
    • Submitting funding applications as required

Marketing & External Engagement

Brand & Community Relations

  • Develop and promote the nursery’s marketing plan
  • Represent the nursery at community events
  • Maintain a positive public image

Customer Satisfaction & Open Days

  • Manage communications with parents to promote feedback and satisfaction

Facilities & Safety

Operations & Compliance

  • Manage stock/procurement processes
  • Ensure stock health/safety and cleanliness
    • Oversee asset maintenance
    • Implement dietary & allergy requirements collaborations with the school kitchen
  • Conduct regular facility audits

Paperwork & Compliance

  • Maintain Safeguarding and record-keeping standards strictly
  • Recommend equipment/purchases to meet educational needs
