Role Description
As the Supportability Engineer (Obsolescence), you’ll operate within the sustainability and availability risk domain, addressing obsolescence challenges across mechanical, electrical, and combat systems. This role combines analytical expertise with hands-on fieldwork, including:
- Onboarding contractor ships at Portsmouth Naval Base
- Collaborating with ships’ crews
- Investigating obsolescence issues
- Providing recommendations to ensure ongoing operational availability
Your work will merge engineering judgment, data-driven analysis, field expertise, and cross-disciplinary collaboration to sustain systems through their lifecycle.
Core Duties

Data-driven risk assessment:
- Analyse engineering, supply chain, and support data to identify emerging obsolescence challenges and escalate risks when necessary.

Solution development:
- Contribute to resolving obsolescence through strategies like component substitutions, lifecycle purchases, and minor design modifications.
- Support senior engineers in evaluating trade-offs between technical, cost, and programmatic considerations.

Technical technical technical expertise:
- Interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation to support obsolescence impact assessments and data integration efforts.

Problem-resolution and clarity:
- Investigate and respond to queries about obsolescence data and system impacts, delivering timely, accurate, and well-structured communications.

Field investigation and documentation:
- Conduct onboard surveys across various vessel classes, identifying obsolete equipment/components.
- Document findings to support lifecycle management and replacement planning.

Stakeholder liaison and data management:
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders (engineering, supply chain, maintenance teams) to ensure accurate data capture of obsolescence-related insights.
Essential Skills
- Technical Knowledge: Broad engineering expertise in Mechanical, Electrical, or Combat Systems
- Technical Interpretation: Ability to understand and analyse engineering drawings and specialist documentation
- Obsolescence Awareness: Understanding of obsolescence triggers, root causes, and mitigation strategies, including regulatory requirements
- Industry Alignment: Maritime/Marine Royal Navy or Defence Commercial background preferred
