Job Overview
To undertake a comprehensive range of occupational health activities related to the:
- Assessment of employee fitness to work
- Protection of employee health at work
- Promotion of employee health at work
- Support of individuals with disabilities in both gaining and sustaining employment
The post holder may at times work unsupervised, and the post holder is accountable for their professional actions.
Development of a sound knowledge of the terms and conditions of organisations to which they may be allocated is essential as is the establishment of strong working relations with the authorised officers of the customer.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will deliver a range of OH activities making clinical judgements, and provide technical advice and support as defined by their knowledge, skills and experience.
- They will plan and organise activities or programmes for their own area, of work; and work with the Team Leader / Senior Management Team on service changes impacting outside their own direct area of activity.
- The post holder must comply with all CNWL and OHS policy and inform the Team Leader / Senior Management Team immediately of any difficulties in undertaking the requirements of the post.
- In accordance with the CNWL policy the post holder will be provided with appropriate opportunities and support for their professional development and training.
Working for our organisation
The North West London Occupational Health Shared Service (NWL OH SS) is hosted by Central and North West London Foundation Trust (CNWL) and is made up of a team of experienced occupational health doctors and nurses, supported by administrators. The majority hold specialist qualifications and many have over 20 years’ experience in occupational health.
The service has a strong commercial customer base providing first class professional Occupational Health Services to other NHS organisations as well as small / medium size enterprises (SME). One of the main objectives for the service over the next five years is to consolidate the shared service across NWL and where appropriate continue to expand upon its commercial interests across London and adjoining counties. This is reflected in the job plan.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
The post holder will hold a post graduate OH Specialist Practitioners Qualification (SCPHN) and have a minimum of two years practical experience within the specialty having developed specialist theoretical knowledge across a range of work procedures and practices.
The post holder will deliver a range of OH activities making clinical judgements, provide technical advice and support as defined by their knowledge, skills and experience.
- They will plan and organise activities or programmes for their own area, of work; and work with the Team Leader / Senior Management Team on service changes impacting outside their own direct area of activity.

Essential criteria
- Registered General Nurse
- Undertaken a post graduate Occupational Health Specialist Practitioners Qualification (SCPHN) Health related subject
Desirable criteria
- Counselling Skills Training
- Health Education Certificate/Diploma
- Health & Safety qualifications
Previous Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working in Occupational Health or a closely related field
- Experience of managing a clinical caseload
- Experience of sickness absence management and return to work support

- Experience of health surveillance programmes and workplace risk assessment processes
- Experience of contributing to audit, service improvement or governance activity
Skills And Abilities
Essential criteria
- Ability to manage and prioritise own occupational health caseload
- Ability to undertake fitness for work activity within defined policies and frameworks
- Ability to provide clear written and verbal advice to managers and employees
- Ability to support workplace adjustments and return to work planning
- Good IT skills, including use of electronic occupational health records and standard office systems
Desirable criteria
- Ability to contribute to audit, quality improvement and service development activity
- Ability to provide support and informal guidance to less experienced staff
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of relevant legislation and guidance, including confidentiality, equality and workplace health considerations
- Knowledge of occupational health principles including fitness for work, health protection and health promotion
- Knowledge of professional record keeping and clinical governance requirements
- Understanding of the need to escalate complex, high-risk or contentious cases appropriately
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of health surveillance techniques and occupational exposure management
