Specialist SEND School

Location: Hackney Start Date: September 2026 Required: HCPC registration Salary: Band 6 – Band 7 Contract: Temporary-to-permanent


About the Role

A specialist school for pupils with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) is looking for a qualified Occupational Therapist to join its staff on a temporary-to-permanent basis, starting in September 2026.


Key Responsibilities

You will work across three school sites in Hackney**,** delivering comprehensive occupational therapy support for pupils aged 3–19. Key duties include:

  • Assessing, planning, and delivering occupational therapy programmes tailored to individual pupils’ needs
  • Collaborating with teachers, school leaders, external professionals, and families to enhance pupils’ participation, independence, and access to learning
  • Providing 1:1 therapeutic sessions and supporting small groups or whole classes as required
  • Planning and delivering training for staff to embed occupational therapy strategies and best practice
  • Delivering structured intervention programmes or providing in-the-moment therapeutic support in classrooms
  • Assisting in the smooth operation of all school functions under direction from senior leadership

This large specialist SEND school in Hackney supports children and young people with complex educational, health, and disability needs, including:

  • Severe or profound learning disabilities
  • Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC)
  • Complex medical conditions
  • Additional mental health, sensory, or physical needs

The school follows a multidisciplinary, personalised approach, offering a diverse curriculum that combines:

Requirements

To be considered for this role, you must satisfy the following:

Essential

✅ HCPC registration as an Occupational Therapist ✅ Advanced knowledge of occupational therapy practice in educational settings ✅ Proven experience in supporting children/youth with SEND, including:

  • Complex learning disabilities
  • Physical and sensory needs ✅ Understanding of:
  • Child mental health and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)
  • Trauma, abuse, and its impact on child development, attachment, and behaviour
  • Child development and SEND-specific learning needs
  • Relevant policies, codes of practice, and legislation
  • National curriculum and school provision ✅ Excellent communication, assessment, and report-writing skills ✅ Ability to collaborate as part of a multidisciplinary team
