Children's Occupational Therapist – Children’s Social Care (West Berkshire Council)
Are you passionate about working with children and young people with disabilities? West Berkshire Council has an exciting opportunity to join our Children’s Occupational Therapy Team within Children’s Social Care. Our team aims to enable children and young people to participate, function, and thrive in family life within their home environment.
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Children’s Occupational Therapist to join us and make a genuine difference to the lives of children and their families in West Berkshire. The post is based in Community Social Care within a scenic and supportive environment.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Relevant Occupational Therapy experience, particularly with children with disabilities and complex health/sensory needs
- HCPC registration for an Occupational Therapist
- Familiarity with assessment and intervention processes, including family-centred approaches
Key Responsibilities
As a competent Children’s Occupational Therapist, your role will involve:
Direct Clinical Work
- Deliver robust, child-centered assessments and interventions tailored to the needs of children and young people with disabilities
- Recommend and prescribe specialist equipment, such as:
- Seating systems
- Bathing and toileting aids
- Safety equipment for those with sensory or mobility needs
- Conduct assessments for home adaptations, progressing these through the Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) process
- Collaborate with housing teams and adaptations charities to recommend suitable housing and facilitate essential improvements

Health & Safety Practices
- Complete moving and handling risk assessments
- Prepare manual handling care plans and prescribe hoists/slings, ensuring safe care practices for parents and carers
Team Collaboration
- Work collaboratively with:
- Social Workers
- Family Support Workers
- Multidisciplinary teams (healthcare, education, etc.)
- Contribute to joint working initiatives with external agencies to support child and family well-being
Person Specification
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

Core qualifications and experience:
- Regulation by the HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council)
- Proven experience in a similar Children’s Occupational Therapy role
- Strong knowledge of corporate standards, policies, and safeguarding procedures

Essential skills and attributes:
- In-depth understanding of disability impact on infants, children, and young people
- Excellent assessment, intervention, and report-writing skills
- Collaborative approach to multidisciplinary teamworking
- Strong communication with children, families, and professionals
- Effective time and organisational management
