An exciting development opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 Occupational Therapist

To work within the speciality field of a community Peri-natal Mental Health Service based at the Monkwearmouth Hospital, covering South Tyneside area. Due to the area of expertise of the service, we have developed a bespoke programme to support those without experience in this specialist field to learn and develop their skills over a 12-month period, where you will receive mentoring and training on the job. At the end of the 12 months, you will progress to a Band 6 Occupational Therapist if the competencies have been achieved

You will be expected to carry out all relevant forms of care in partnership with patients, carers and other professionals and in line with agreed standards and clinical policies. Undergoing basic or post-basic training.

You will be managing a variety of conditions which are often complex and challenging. This will involve specialist assessment, treatment and evaluation on the efficacy of service user care, both individually and in groups. Standardised clinical tools will be utilised where you have identified their appropriateness using specialist knowledge; using the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) as the model of practice.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

You will be required to engage with the wider multidisciplinary team and to work across agencies to deliver packages of care in the role of occupational therapist.

The successful candidate would benefit from experience of working within a mental health setting. Under Supervision you will gain the confidence to work towards working autonomously without direct supervision and have strong leadership skills to guide and support other members of the team.

We as a service value enthusiasm, passion, creativity and the ability to motivate self and others. We are committed to supporting personal development and provide robust supervision, support and governance structure.

The successful candidate will benefit from encouragement to continue to develop their own specialist knowledge and competence. Their development will be guided using clinical supervision with the clinical lead occupational therapist, team/peer support and training opportunities, using the Trust’s appraisal process.

We aim to attract and retain a diverse, talented and committed workforce, who are caring and compassionate, and therefore able to meet the demands of the modern NHS now and in the future. In return we can offer a dynamic working environment in which to build a career.
