About The Role
Your expertise. Their independence.
At Gateshead Council, Adult Social Care ensures adults with care and support needs live safe, independent, and fulfilling lives. This includes statutory assessments, safeguarding, prevention, and a variety of community-based support—aligned with the Care Act 2014. Our care model is strengths-based, focusing on wellbeing, independence, and personalised outcomes, helping individuals access the right support—whether through assessments, equipment-assisted independence, technology, or broader community resources.
Since independence takes different forms for everyone, as an Occupational Therapist, you’ll help those affected by illness or disability to recover, maintain, and optimise their independence. Collaborating with individuals, families, carers, and partner agencies, you’ll carry out holistic assessments and develop personalised action plans, enabling people of all ages to live confidently in their homes and communities. Using your expertise, you’ll recommend and deliver practical occupational therapy solutions, from specialist equipment to reablement support, in line with the Care Act 2014 and related legislation.
What You'll Get To Do
- Work in partnership with individuals and carers to design, deliver, and review care plans based on assessed risks and needs, ensuring service standards align with Council Policy.
- Prepare accurate assessments and make recommendations for minor adaptations, specialist equipment, and reablement plans.
- Provide practical guidance on using equipment and adaptations for people and carers, ensuring safety and boosting user confidence.
- Recommend and facilitate specialist equipment, reablement services, and instruct users, carers, and care providers on equipment usage.
- Maintain high standards of data quality across all case management records.
- Conduct occasional joint visits with board partners and stakeholders for feasibility surveys and advice.
- Align practice with Council priorities, ensuring procedures meet standards, expectations, and current legislation.
- Adhere to the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct of the College of Occupational Therapy.
- Ensure a skilled workforce is retained to meet quality care benchmarks through Continuous Professional Development, aligned with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Standards.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
