General Summary The Office Nurse is responsible for providing quality, compassionate patient care in the clinic setting, consistent with Holston Medical Group’s quality practice standards, policies, procedures, and customer service expectations.
As a member of the clinical staff, the Office Nurse will proactively identify patient needs and implement directed methodologies to improve both patient clinical experience and care. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Taking vital signs
- Collecting data with written and electronic documentation
- Administering medications
- Serving as a primary Health Educator in the Patient-Centered Medical Home Health Care Delivery Model
Main Responsibilities
Manage patient care and operations effectively:
- Utilize patient-first values to assist patients with their needs
- Greet patients compassionately with a friendly demeanour
- Accurately assess and record patient vital signs in the electronic database
- Prepare patients for examinations
- Serve as a Health Educator as directed within the Patient-Centered Medical Home Health Care Delivery Model
Coordinate procedural and medication-related tasks:
- Obtain prior authorizations and pre-certifications as needed for procedures or tests
- Dispose of contaminated supplies/used items
- Sterilize medical instruments as required
- Ensure exam rooms are clean and stocked for patient use
- Maintain supplies and equipment; proactively collaborate with colleagues to stock
- Pick up vaccines and other medications as needed

Fulfill administrative and compliance responsibilities:
- Mail normal labs to patients and call patients with abnormal labs
- Conduct customer service checks on patients every 10 minutes
- Change sharps container and biohazard trash as required
- Follow policies and procedures set by Holston Medical Group
- Maintain communication with providers to ensure patient needs are met
- Enroll patients in myHMG as instructed
- Direct Colon Screening as required
Support compliance and support staff:
- Ensure clinical equipment remains in operating order (e.g., crash cart, defibrillator, autoclave)
- Mentor new nursing staff and facilitate office orientation
- Maintain Health Department records for children’s vaccinations
- Align clinical areas to meet site visit standards
- Maintain strict confidentiality for all personnel and patient PHI (Protected Health Information)
Education, Experience, and Knowledge
Essential Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- LPN license in the state where employed
- 0–2 years of LPN experience preferred
- Active IV Certification required
- CPR certified
- Exceptional communication skills for patient and colleague interactions
- Team collaboration ability in a dynamic care environment

- Verbal communication with patients, staff, and stakeholders to exchange information efficiently (Receiving detailed verbal instructions, making precise sound-based distinctions, and observing oral judgement standards.)
- Observation and assessment ability (Differentiating between subtle details, remaining aware of the clinic environment, and prioritising calmly.)
- Stationary work duties (Upright posture for 75% of the workday.)
- Mobility (Frequent walking to complete tasks.)
- Physical effort (Bending, reaching across/\through directions, exerting pressure for object manipulation, and working primarily with fingers—e.g., dispensing medications.)
- Multitasking and adaptability (Juggling multiple responsibilities with interruptions; reassessing priorities instantaneously and consistently.)
- Patient/staff interaction skills (Building cooperation with co-workers and adapting to diverse patient backgrounds.)
Marginal capabilities:
- Remain seated for at least 25% of the task period (varied based on daily needs).
- Occasional lifting of objects up to 50 pounds.
- Tactile recognisation of objects for therapy or inventory.
- Autonomous workstyles to refine procedural methods.
- Peripheral vision in monitoring multiple areas (tools, patients, or supplies).
- Colour identification for inventory or professional attire (e.g., gloves).
