On-Site Electrician
Permanent Electrician – HMP Ranby (Ministry of JusticeFacilities Management)
We are excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Electrician working in HMP Ranby under a MoJ account, providing essential services in Facilities Management across the UK’s prisons.
About the Role
- Contract type: Permanent
- Hours: 39 hours per week, with rotating shifts (08:00 – 17:00)
- Weekend work: 1 in 4 weekends (on rota, with a 15% standard salary allowance)
- Salary: £30,866 – £36,135 per year, depending on experience
You’ll be part of Amey, supporting His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) to ensure safe, clean, and efficient operational environments. Working across 60 secure premises in England and Wales, your key responsibilities will include:
- Planned and preventative electrical maintenance (including administrative duties)
- Fault-finding, problem-solving, and repairing electrical systems in prisons
- Carrying out minor electrical works (replacements, installations) with BS7671 compliance, including inspections, testing, and documentation
- Ensuring all electrical systems meet safety, legality, and functional standards while supporting both staff and residents in a secure environment
- Assisting the Responsible & Authorised Electrical Persons as required
- Upholding Health & Safety policies, including Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work, across all duties
- Assisting with escort duties or other ad-hoc responsibilities as needed
Responsibilities
- Perform planned and preventative electrical maintenance, including record-keeping
- Diagnose, repair, and resolve electrical system faults efficiently
- Conduct like-for-like replacements and minor electrical work with BS7671 inspections, logging results for compliance
- Ensure electrical systems remain safe, compliant, and operational, contributing to a secure prison environment
- Support both Responsible and Authorised Persons as required
- Enforce Health & Safety standards, perform risk assessments, and follow Safe Working procedures
- Assist with escort duties and any additional operational tasks as directed

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
- City & Guilds 2367 (Level 2 Electrical Installation) or 2357 equivalent qualification
- BS7671 18th Edition certification (consideration given with BS7671 17th Edition + willingness to upskill)
- Strong knowledge of electrical safety, including:
- Planned & preventive maintenance operations
- Health & Safety regulations
- Domestic environment and commercial-scale system awareness
- Electrical systems and "Electricity at Work" Regulations
- Basic IT skills
Essential Skills
- Excellent organisation, time management, and adaptability
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
- Physical robustness to work at heights and independently
- Advanced ability to use initiative and problem-solving in high-security environments
Desirable (But Not Essential)
- Experiences with fire alarm and CCTV systems
- Knowledge of security, lock-up area, or emergency lighting systems
Security Clearance & Additional Requirements
- Your employer (Amey) will support the Prison Security Clearance process, but it’s a mandatory requirement for this role.
