Role Description
The Oncology Pharmacist is a full-time, on-site role based in Inverness, providing specialist clinical pharmacy services to oncology and haematology patients across NHS Highland. The role involves reviewing and verifying chemotherapy and systemic anti-cancer therapy prescriptions, ensuring safe, evidence-based, and cost-effective use of medicines.

Day-to-day responsibilities include:
- Clinical assessment of treatment plans
- Medicines reconciliation
- Counselling patients and families on cancer therapies and supportive treatments
- Monitoring for adverse effects and drug interactions
The postholder will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including medical, nursing, and pharmacy colleagues, to contribute to treatment protocols, clinical pathways, and audit activities that support high standards of care. Additional duties may include:
- Participation in ward rounds
- Education of healthcare staff
- Support for service development
- Contribution to governance and risk management processes within the oncology pharmacy service
Qualifications
Professional pharmacy credentials, including an MPharm degree (or equivalent), registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), and post-registration experience in hospital or clinical pharmacy.
Specialist oncology and haematology knowledge, including competence in systemic anti-cancer therapy, chemotherapy protocols, supportive care regimens, and management of treatment-related toxicities.

Clinical skills in medicines optimisation, prescription screening and verification, medicines reconciliation, therapeutic monitoring, and application of evidence-based guidelines to individual patient care.
Safety and governance capabilities, including understanding of aseptic preparation principles, risk management, clinical audit, incident reporting, and adherence to local and national cancer service standards.
Communication and collaboration skills to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams, provide clear information and counselling to patients and families, and contribute to staff education and training.
Organizational and analytical abilities to manage workload in a busy clinical environment, prioritize complex cases, use electronic prescribing and clinical information systems, and contribute to service improvement initiatives.
Desirable experience in NHS or other public health systems, postgraduate training or qualifications
