ONSS Substation Electrical Engineer

Contract Role – ONSS Substation Electrical Engineer

Location: London or Glasgow Employment Type: Contract basis (initially) Expectation: Experience in substations with proficiency in minimum 275kV systems, preferably within offshore wind or EHV transmission


Main Purpose of the Role

The ONSS Substation Electrical Engineer plays a critical technology and standards leadership role in delivering the onshore substation (ONSS) package for East Anglia 1N (EA1N), a major offshore wind development in the South-East of the UK.

Reporting to the ONSS Package Manager, the role is responsible for:

  • Driving high-level technical oversight across design, construction, testing, commissioning, and close-out phases to support the project’s Final Investment Decision (FID).
  • Negotiating, reviewing, and agreeing technical Employer Requirements (ERs) with contractors and interfacing teams (contractor constraints such as MEQ, export cables, and system integration).
  • Collaborating globally across Europe on technical and commercial matters, including travel for contract discussions & project delivery coordination.

Key Responsibilities

Technical & Delivery Leadership

  • Support Safety Management System (SMS), Environmental Management System (EMS), and Quality Management System (QMS) implementation.
  • Ensure compliance with HSQE legislation (including CDM regulatory obligations) and coordinate health and safety during construction phases to minimise risks.
  • Monitor Civil, Electrical, and Cable Site Works against UK/EU specifications (British Standards, Euro Codes, etc.).
  • Oversee Contractors’ performance through site visits, toolbox talks, daily coordination meetings and attendance at pre-task briefings.
  • Manage electrical design data from multiple packages (MEQ, export cables, system integration) to ensure a timely-integrated design without compromising project schedules.
  • Own the electrical scope (EHV, HV, LV) by:
    • Specifying, designing, and procuring equipment.
    • Collaborating on site installation, testing (e.g., Factory Acceptance Tests), inspection, and commissioning phases.
  • Coordinate Lessons Learned initiatives across multiple projects to enhance business value and risk management.

Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure all technical assessments, reports, and due diligence adhere to internal procedures and industry standards.
  • Review manufacturer/contractor documentation for compliance with project requirements.
  • Lead quality assurance/control inspections during manufacture and factory testing phases.
  • Compile risk, safety, and status reports (weekly, monthly, and ad hoc) for stakeholders, including progress tracking and early warning flagging.

Strategic Contribution

  • Stay current with emerging technical advancements in EHV/HV/LV systems to drive cost/safety/risk optimisation.
  • Liaise internally with Project Services, Regional Directors, O&M, Contract, and HSQE Teams to align purchasing strategy, asset operation, and cost risk management.
  • Influence and adjudicate critical project decisions while balancing technical excellence, efficiency, and budget.

Key Criteria

Essential Experience/CriteriaDetails
Technical ExpertiseMinimum 10+ years in large-scale substations (≤275kV or higher)—ideally within offshore wind or transmission networks.
Proven knowledge of power system studies (e.g., short circuit calculation, load flow, harmonic analysis).
EHV/HV/LV Components & SystemsDeep understanding of: switchgear, transformers, neutral earthing, shunt reactors/capacitors, harmonic filters, MTV/AC/DC systems.
**Technical Degree: **Degree-level education (in electrical engineering, power systems preferred) with Masters (MEng preferred).
Industry Experience– 4+ years in offshore transmission projects (preferably for wind farms or grid connections).<br>– Hands-on experience managing contract stages (procurement, programme, cost/risk tracking).
Health/Safety/Regulatory Focus:In-depth knowledge of CDM regulations, HSQE legislation, environmental compliance in construction/marine sectors.
Effective Communication– Confident verbal/written reporting for internal & contractual stakeholders.<br>– Ability to Summarise complex technical issues for non-engineer teams.
Leadership & Risk MitigationProactive stakeholder coordination, resilience under tight deadlines, ability to manage conflict, anticipate barriers, and implement mitigation.
