Operational Engineer
Location: Gatwick (UKPN Services, Client Delivery) Contract Type: Permanent Salary: £68,144 per annum, plus business needs car and bonus of 3%
About the Role
Reporting to the Lead Operational Engineer, this permanent role is based in the UKPN Services Client Delivery office at our Gatwick site.

Job Purpose
The Operational Engineer (up to 11kV/33kV) will undertake Operation & Maintenance tasks across the electrical network as part of a team to meet contractual targets. Based primarily in the Gatwick site, you will develop skills to support projects across UKPN Services.
Key Responsibilities: Technological authorisations may require obtaining appropriate clearances.
Principal Accountabilities
- Conduct operation/maintenance tasks on 11kV/33kV networks for client projects
- Maintain contractual compliance and exceed client expectations
- Proactively seek new opportunities with clients
- Undertake operational tasks (AP, SAP, Control)
- Ensure supervised Operation & Maintenance (O&M) – including:
- HV/LV switchgear & transformers (11kV/33kV/isolators)
- Relay control systems (testing and maintenance)
- Align working practices to CDM regulations and UK Power Networks Health and Safety Policies
- Develop tailored site-specific health & safety procedures
- Maintain asset databases for tracked O&M activities
- Fulfill both planned & reactive maintenance
- Fault diagnosis & repair
- On-call standby duties (adhering to a site rota)
- Retire and update drawings and fault records
- Monitor grids and escort contractors to ensure adherence to distribution safety rules
- Provide technical support for planned projects and O&M tasks
- Participate in team briefings, feed-back sessions, and operational meetings
- Work unsocial hours to address system faults & failures

Experience & Qualifications
Required:
- 11kV/33kV operational experience (EXPERIENCE ON COMPLETION OF APPROVED TRAINING COURSE REFERRED TO BELOW QUALIFIED PERSON IS WELCOME)
- Currently in training (or qualified) 11kV/33kV control engineer (clearances pending)
- Passed medical, drugs & alcohol screening (part of pre-employment check)
- Minimum formal qualification: ONC (Ordinary National Certificate/HNC) – in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent recognised qualification)
- Relevant Safety/Regulatory qualification (e.g., IOSH) (Three candidates exempt if holding NVQ Level 3 or equivalent; relevant Electrical Trade qualification sufficient)
- Reading, interpreting, and understanding schematic & line drawings
- Experience working in covered spaces, tunnels and at height
- Track record in electrical distribution networks
- Problem-solving – identified issues sustainably and evaluated solutions
- Strong communication and customer-facing skills
- Full UK driving licence
