Operational Engineer Vacancy – Gatwick Office
About the Role
This is a permanent position reporting to the Lead Operational Engineer within UKPN Services – Client Delivery, based in our Gatwick office.
Location: Gatwick (Home County Region) Salary: £68,144 plus business needs car and a 3% bonus clause. Medical & Security Checks: Successful candidates will undergo medical and DBS reference checks. Closing Date: 14/07/2026

Job Purpose
The Operational Engineer will work on high-voltage electrical networks (up to 11kV/33kV), performing operation and maintenance tasks as part of a team to meet agreed targets.
Based in J-building, Gatwick Office, the Operational Engineer will also develop skills and clearances to work on UKPN Services’ projects across other areas. Some tasks could require attaining additional clearances.
Principal Accountabilities
Technical Delivery
- Perform operational tasks on electrical networks (e.g., 11kV/33kV work).
- Control AP/CAP and повион maintenance activities up to 11kV (33kV).
- Oversee and execute reactive and planned maintenance of HV/LV networks, including:
- Switchgear
- Transformers
- Isolators and switches
- Protection and relay systems
- Maintain and perform testing across 11kV/33kV and LV protections/relays.

Compliance & Risk Management
- Comply with CDM and UKPN Health & Safety regulations.
- Ensure substation procedures meet efficiencies and safety standards.
- Support contractor coordination and site oversight.
- Support technical investigations and fault repairs.
Management & Adherence
- Update asset databases after maintenance work completion.
- Ensure compliance with Distribution Safety Rules in all activities.
- Coordinate standby duties with site rotational team access.
Technical Support & Team Collaboration
- Attend team briefings and contribute feedback effectively.
- Collaborate on planned and emergency works, responding to faults unsocial hours as necessary.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential Requirements
- Proven experience in operational maintenance of electrical networks up to 11kV (33kV).
- Completion of 11kV (33kV) operational controls or current training.
- Medical clearance, DBS referral check, and drugs/alcohol screening.
- Minimum ONC (HNC level) qualification in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent.
- Relevant safety qualification (e.g., IOSH).
- Ability to read and understand technical schematics and line drawings.
- Experience across diverse environments including:
- Working confined spaces
- Working at height
- Strong analytical skills, ability to plan and troubleshoot work.
- Proactive problem-solving and customer-focused mindset.
- Possess a full UK driving licence.

Performing Work Safely
- Responsible for maintaining safe methods and systems design.
- Induct subordinates, ensuring all team members follow health and safety protocols.
- Play an active role in completing UKPN H&S requirements and collaboration.
- Training and advice to mitigate risks.
Health & Safety Responsibilities
- Managers (including this role) have a shared legal responsibility to ensure health, safety, and risk mitigation for:
- Staff
- Contractors under their direct control
- Public or third-party stakeholders
- Knowledge and enforcement of health & safety risks, proper controls, and environmental impact assessment.
- Use of fall arrest or elevated working must adhere to maximum safe working load (116KG weight cap).
