A unique opportunity to manage two closely linked yet distinct services within BHT Sussex, inspiring change across Sussex in support of individuals’ independence and recovery.
Position Summary
Location: Brighton Salary: £36,729 per annum (plus £1,218 Essential User Car Allowance and Management On-Call Allowance) Hours: 37 hours per week Contract: Fixed-Term, 12 months (internal applicants only; secondment opportunities considered) Closing Date: Sunday 5th July 2026 (23:59) Interview Date: Friday 10th July 2026
About the Role
The Operational Manager leads the Move On Project and Accommodation for Work Project, each with distinct funding streams, remits and outcomes, but sharing a common goal: supporting individuals towards independence.
Key Services:

Move On Project
- Safe, recovery-focused accommodation in 6 shared houses for 26 individuals who have completed structured rehabilitation or sustained recovery from substance use.
- Emphasis on abstinence, peer support, and stable lifestyle enforcement (including zero tolerance for drugs/alcohol during stays).
- Residents required to engage in education, training, or employment to support recovery.

Accommodation for Work Project (Funded by the National Lottery Community Fund)
- Temporary shared housing (4 shared houses in the city) and multi-agency support for 21 single adults (aged 18–65) with a local connection to Brighton & Hove.
- Focus on helping individuals transition into paid/volunteered work, training, or employment via structured pathways.
Both projects provide housing support, office-based and on-site staffing, and collaborative goals of:
- Promoting stable accommodation
- Facilitating meaningful work/activities
- Strengthening independence through recovery pathways.

Shared Goals:
- Aligning services to ensure a seamless transition between substance recovery, housing and employment support.
- Overseeing thrive operations safely, effectively, and sustainably.
Note: The Operational Manager participates in the on-call roten for Addiction Services.
Responsibilities
Purpose and Operations:
- Ensure clear understanding and execution of both services’ ethos, objectives, and operational needs.
- Align services with Project Targets while maintaining governance requirements.
Team Leadership:
- Recruitment, staff management, appraisals, and training for senior and multi-disciplinary teams.
- Support individuals managing workloads independently, enabling them to drive professional growth.
- Supervision and coaching for a direct team of minimum 6 staff.
Collaborations:
- Partner with statutory, voluntary sector, and specialist organisations for joint-work systems and service injections.
- Assure strong client referrals and timely transitions between support phases.
Health, Safety & Risk:
- Develop and implement risk assessments for:
- Service providers
- Properties/property management
- Clients’ needs
- Staff lone working policies
- Operational risks, including adverse experiences & safeguarding.
- Monitor compliance in health and safety domains:
- Incident records (accidents, aggression, near-misses)
- Staff/wellbeing audits
Person Specification: Core Requirements
The ideal candidate should:
- Have a committment to BHT Sussex’s values (people-led, equality, and equity framework).
- Demonstrate exceptional communication and leadership skills.
- Hold professional experience in:
- Addictions and recovery
- Homelessness provision
- Social care (especially complex needs)
- Proven line management experience including team supervision, coaching, and inclusivity.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Psychologically Informed care and its delivery
- Trauma-Informed approaches.
- Ability to:
- Plan and execute time-sensitive complex tasks under pressure.
- Assess risks/undertake multi-stakeholder collaboration.
- Foster extractive agency change toward lifelong independence.
- Prioritise effectively while managing conflicting demands.
