About the Role

Monzo’s Operational Risk team is growing, and we’re looking for a second line of defence Operational Risk Manager to join our Risk & Compliance team.

In this role, you’ll work to:

  • Support the business in rolling out and embedding Monzo’s risk management framework.
  • Focus on operational resilience, financial processes, investment/wealth products, and regulatory compliance—including the Internal Capital Adequacy Assessment Process (ICAAP).
  • Balance regulation with Monzo’s agile "test and learn" approach to product launches.
  • Build, monitor, and challenge the operational risk framework, including oversight of first line teams and risk event investigations.
  • Partner with product, risk, and compliance teams to embed robust risk practices—especially in Finance and Wealth/Investment areas.
  • Assess and report on operational risk via technology adoption, regulatory changes, and data-driven trends.
  • Drive a culture of risk awareness across the organisation, making risk accessible and actionable.

  • Framework implementation & oversight:
    • Manage the risk self-assessment process and second line monitoring.
  • Product development support:
    • Embed risk and control governance in new financial products, particularly in Finance and Investment teams.
  • Incident & event management:
    • Investigate operational risk events, partner with teams to mitigate risks and implement controls.
  • Comprehensive risk reviews:
    • Conduct in-depth reviews of business areas—focusing on technological adoption, regulatory compliance, and operational risk reporting to oversight committees.
  • Process change oversight:
    • Review and assess operational changes for risk impact analyses.
  • Data-driven insights:
    • Analyse operational risk data (incidents, events, external risks) to identify trends and emerging risks.
  • Risk culture champion:
    • Share best practices in accessible ways and build a culture where risk is meaningful for everyone.

What You’ll Bring

We’d love to hear from you if you have:

✅ Previous experience in a second line of defence role—whether in banking, financial services, or risk consultancy.

✅ Regulatory knowledge of:

  • Operational risk frameworks
  • Operational resilience requirements (applicable to regulated banks)

✅ Expertise in:

  • Wealth & investment products/services, including controls.
  • Finance operational processes (e.g., reporting, transactions, audit-detail).

✅ Hands-on experience in:

  • Risk oversight, challenging First Line teams (including senior stakeholders).
  • Data analysis of risk patterns, and presenting insights to oversight committees.
