An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Operational Technology Engineer to join our Digital & Innovation team.

The energy industry is advancing with investment in smart technology innovation, and Northern Powergrid—as the company responsible for powering everyday life for 8 million customers across 3.9 million homes and businesses in the North East, Yorkshire, and northern Lincolnshire—is at the forefront of delivering a power network that meets the region’s needs now and in the future.


The Role

The position of Operational Technology Infrastructure Engineer spans multiple disciplines and seeks ambitious individuals from both Operational Technology (OT) and IT backgrounds. This role is supported through a dedicated training and development programme as we build a multi-skilled team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain Operational Technology infrastructure, including:
    • VMWare vSphere
    • Microsoft-based platforms
    • Unix-based systems
  • Implement and manage security tooling, such as firewalls, anti-virus, SIEM solutions, and vulnerability scanners
  • Support the OT Incident and Change Management processes
  • Assist with testing new system releases, enforcing projects with defined testing standards
  • Represent Operational Technology on infrastructure-related projects
  • Facilitate software updates, patches, and service packs to ensure system reliability.

Key Competencies

  • Ability to work under pressure while managing third-party support staff and contractors
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft and Unix-based operating systems
  • Proficiency in network communications—firewalls, switches, and routers
  • Deep understanding of VMWare vSphere solutions
  • Commitment to ownership of technical problems, maintaining service levels for high-profile/critical systems
  • Strong communication skills across all organisational levels
  • Methodical, highly motivated, and rigorous problem-solving approach for root-cause analysis

Essential Qualifications and Experience

✔ Minimum HNC/Level 4 qualification in information systems or related discipline ✔ Full valid UK driving license ✔ Minimum 3 years’ experience in OT or IT infrastructure support at a 2nd/3rd line level, with exposure to:

  • VMWare vSphere
  • Microsoft platforms
  • RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux)
  • Firewall configuration
  • Cybersecurity tooling frameworks

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

★ ITIL v4 certification ★ Level 6 qualification/Degree (or equivalent) in Information Systems or related field ★ Experience with Service Now platform ★ Proficiency in risk management principles ★ Prior experience in OT or highly regulated environments
