About the Role: Operations & Safety (O&S) Consultant
The Operations & Safety (O&S) Group, a core part of our Intelligent Infrastructure (II) business, provides high-value advisory services. We enable public and private sector clients—including National Highways, Transport Scotland, West of England Combined Authority (WECA), and National Grid—to deliver sustainable and safe operating solutions. Our work supports Net Zero carbon and Vision Zero safety objectives.
Our Core Expertise
We specialize in six critical technical areas:
- Operational safety – Helping clients understand and mitigate safety risks in designs, operations, and technologies.
- Transport network operations – Supporting clients in developing and assessing operational models, standards, and procedures.
- Human-centred design – Applying principles of human factors, ergonomics, and behavioural science to design environments, systems, products, and services.
- Strategy development – Advising clients on creating sustainable, resilient, and people-focused strategies, including approaches like Digital Roads and Connected Plant.
- Policy monitoring and evaluation – Designing and executing multi-disciplinary monitoring and evaluation frameworks in line with Treasury requirements.
- Tunnel systems & operations – Supporting the design, operation, and management of tunnels across the highway and utility sectors.

Who You Are
To succeed in this role, you’ll bring the following attributes and experience:
- A technical background with qualifications (e.g., a degree) aligned with one or more of the six areas listed above.
- Professional experience in working on high-quality consultancy projects within one or more of these technical areas.
- The ability to critically analyse information, synthesise findings, and communicate insights effectively.
- Practical experience, whether as a client, consultant, or contractor—particularly within transport, public sector, or high-risk industries.
