Operations Manager – Hooton EFW Plant

What Are We Aiming For?

Are you a seasoned professional with a strong operational background in power generation? Do you uphold rigorous QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety and Environment) standards and possess NEBOSH qualifications? Do you have proven leadership experience managing teams in dynamic environments?

If so, you could be the ideal candidate for our Operations Manager position at our Hooton EFW (Energy from Waste) plant.


What Will You Be Doing?

Reporting directly to the Plant Manager, your primary responsibilities will include:

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure safe generation and environmental compliance of the plant, adhering to:
    • Operational limits
    • OEM-best practice guidelines
    • Safety, environmental, and QHSE standards
  • Maximise availability, reliability, and efficiency of the plant within contractual obligations.
  • Oversee first-line maintenance, routines, and testing activities recorded in the CMMS (Computerised Maintenance Management System) to meet reliability targets.
  • Ensure strict adherence to site procedures and management instructions.
  • Act as a key member of the site management team, delivering performance alongside strategic objectives.
  • Proactively enhance plant reliability and operational performance.
  • Manage and develop the Operations and Fuel Handling teams in a 24/7 operational environment.
  • Provide out-of-hours support, including emergency site attendance where necessary.
  • Accountable for the performance, development, and management of the Operations team.
  • Identify challenges in plant operations, processes, or personnel and recommend solutions.
  • Undertake Plant Manager responsibilities when required (per delegated authority).
  • Execute any additional duties as necessary by the company.

In partnership with the Maintenance Manager, you will ensure the plant operates in the safe, most cost-effective manner while maximising profitability, considering lifetime durability and operating costs.


Qualifications to Succeed

This role requires:

  • A strong background in power operations, complemented by engineering qualifications (e.g. HND or higher).
  • Proven management experience in the power industry, with preference for biomass or EFW sector knowledge.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in MS Office, particularly Microsoft Excel.
  • Financial acumen in budgeting, contract management, and cost control at a managerial level.
  • Knowledge of UK safety legislation, environmental permits, and compliance frameworks (ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001).
  • The ability to engage effectively with stakeholders—both internal and external—to foster a ‘one team’ ethos.

This position operates on a 40-hour workweek, Monday to Friday, with occasional ad-hoc national travel required.
