Operations Team Leader

Shift Manager (Monday to Friday, 1300-2130)

Location: Polar Speed Distribution Ltd, Unit 10 The Hub, Nobel Way, Birmingham, B6 7EU Hours: 40 hours per week

About the Role

This permanent Shift Manager role ensures the seamless operation of transport and warehouse hub activities within a temperature-controlled environment. Reporting directly to a senior site manager, you'll oversee key functions like vehicle dispatch, site security, temperature monitoring, and staff management—pledging UPS's commitment to quality, safety, and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Site Operations & Compliance

  • Maintain smooth hub functioning—managing transport, warehouse logistics, and sortation efficiency.
  • Oversee site security and ensure compliance with health, safety, and operational protocols.
  • Monitor temperature-controlled areas (storage, processes, and equipment) to comply with regulatory parameters.
  • Liaise with hubs and depots to optimise network performance and mitigate transport disruptions.
  • Coordinate with trunk and HGV routes—monitoring departures, delays, and mitigation actions.
  • Oversee vehicle and driver compliance, including log records, operator licences, and load security.

Staff & Resource Management

  • Handle agency driver coordination, training, and audit compliance to ensure proper temperature management knowledge.
  • Manage staff absence, holidays, and resource allocation—ensuring a well-functioning team.
  • Conduct return-to-work interviews, accident investigations, disciplinaries, and disciplinary action where required.

Operational Excellence & Problem-Solving

  • Implement process improvements to reduce errors in warehouse loading/unloading, scanning, waxing, and quarantine/relabelling.
  • Address non-conformances (Damaged Product, security breaches, etc.), completing required forms (NCRs, damage inspection reports).
  • Resolve transport/communication delays with urgency to protect network tempo.
  • Host daily debriefings to highlight challenges, risks, and lessons learned.

Executive & Senior Liaison

  • Deputy to Senior Site Manager on operational decisions, delivering clear reports/issues and recommended solutions.
  • No limit: Oversee or undertake any balancing activity (third routing, process revisions, audit gaps) as needed.

Requirements

  • Proven warehouse operations management experience atShift Manager or senior role level.
  • Strong grasp of temperature-controlled logistics (pharma, fresh foods, or cold-chain experience beneficial).
  • Knowledge of relevant UK legislation (H&S, FMD, non-conformance management) and workplace conflict resolution.
  • Experience with TMS (Transportation Management Systems) assets or similar systems preferred.
  • Ability to maintain clear and accurate communication with senior teams in tempos or under pressure.
