Operations Technician

Operations Technician – Sutton Bridge Power Station

Location: Sutton Bridge, South Holland, Lincolnshire, England

Sutton Bridge Power Station, located in the south-east of Lincolnshire within the South Holland district of England, is a 850 MW gas-fired power station featuring state-of-the-art GE 9FA turbine technology. The facility is critical in delivering reliable electricity to local communities and supporting the national grid.

About the Role

As an Operations Technician, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the station’s 850 MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) plant. This position requires a strong technical background, a commitment to operational and safety excellence, and the ability to meet both technical and commercial objectives. Your work will directly contribute to maintaining plant availability, reliability, and compliance while supplying electricity to the National Grid.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitor and control mechanical, electrical, and control systems to ensure the station operates efficiently and safely.
  • Respond promptly to plant alarms and operational issues, performing fault diagnosis and implementing corrective actions.
  • Conduct plant start-up, shutdown, and operational switching in accordance with approved procedures and site safety rules.
  • Follow established operating procedures, utilising technical documentation, drawings, and manuals for safe operations.
  • Ensure generating plant remains .available and compliant with national safety and environmental regulations.
  • Collaborate with the Operations Manager and Shift Supervisors to deliver site initiatives, including asset management, continuous improvement, and change management.
  • Assist in achieving station Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and business objectives.
  • Use the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for defect reporting and work planning.
  • Perform first-line fault finding and routine maintenance on mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation systems.
  • Support maintenance activities and outages, providing operational expertise.
  • Contribute to Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and incident investigations to enhance plant reliability.
  • Maintain stringent health, safety, and environmental standards while adhering to policies and statutory requirements.

Other Reasonable Duties

  • Work toward and maintain Authorised Person status in line with station safety rules.
  • Complete mandatory technical training and competency development activities.
  • Develop safe systems of work while ensuring adherence to site safety protocols.
  • Provide operational support during abnormal plant conditions and challenges.
  • Assist station management and other departments in delivering business objectives.
  • Perform additional duties as required to support company operations.

Reporting Structure and Working Relationships

The Operations Technician reports directly to the Operations Shift Supervisors and Operations Manager.


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Physical Demands: Standing for extended periods, climbing stairs, ladders, elevated platforms, and walkways—requiring manual dexterity and the ability to lift up to 15 kg.
  • Environment: Work may involve confined spaces, exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, high noise levels, and fluctuating weather conditions.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
    • Safety helmets
    • Eye protection
    • Respirators (face fit testing required per HSE guidance)
    • Hearing protection
    • Chemical-resistant clothing
    • Flame-resistant clothing (FRC)
    • Heat-resistant gloves
    • High-voltage protective gear
    • Fall arrest systems
  • Strict no-smoking policy in accordance with UK health and safety laws.

Fitness for Duty

All selected candidates must participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, including:

  • Pre-offer physical examination
  • Post-offer drug screening
  • Random drug screening post-employment

Work Schedule

  • Bespoke shift pattern averaging 38 hours per week, consisting of 12-hour day and night shifts to support 24/7 power station operations.
  • Workdays include night shifts, weekends, and bank holidays, with fixed holidays included in the shift pattern.

Compensation

  • Annual base salary: £59,618
  • Eligibility for annual performance bonus

Technical Knowledge, Qualifications, and Experience

Educational Background:

  • Minimum qualification of ONC/HNC (or equivalent) in an engineering discipline.
  • Proven ability to apply technical knowledge in a power generation environment.

Experience in Power Generation:

  • Significant operational experience in Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) facilities or comparable industries (e.g., oil and gas, petrochemical, or heavy industrial sectors).
  • Preferable backgrounds in:
    • Mechanical, electrical, or control and instrumentation (C&I) disciplines
    • Modern control systems and plant operations
  • Demonstrated experience in fault diagnosis, plant monitoring, and routine maintenance, particularly within power generation, utilities, or industrial sectors.

Health and Safety:

  • Strong understanding of HSE legislation, policies, and procedures with a commitment to maintaining high safety standards in high-risk environments.

Additional Skills:

  • Ability to interpret technical documentation, drawings, and manuals.
  • Experience in Risk Assessments, Method Statements, and safe systems of work.
  • Skilled in accurate operational data recording, effective shift handover, and decision-making.
  • Self-motivated, flexible, and adept at prioritisation—can collaborate within shift teams and adapt to operational changes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with experience working across Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering departments.
  • Willingness to pursue further training, including achieving Authorised Person status.
  • Valid and unrestricted UK driving licence required.
