Operations Technician - Instrumentation
National Gas – Instrumentation Operations Technician Nor Productika/K DSS/ABV10527
Location: Kirriemuir
Salary: £44,642 – £52,519 base + OTE of £55,000 – £60,000 (including standby/authorisations)
About This Role
As an Instrumentation Operations Technician, you’ll ensure the safe, reliable operation of National Gas’ critical transmission assets at our Kirriemuir site, with regular travel to AGI (Above Ground Installation) locations across your operational area.
This hands-on role focuses on:
- Maintaining, inspecting, calibrating and commissioning process instrumentation across pipelines, AGIs, compressor stations and terminals
- Working with control systems, safety-critical instrumentation and hazardous environments
- Supporting assets integrity, reliability projects and MODIFICATIONS/UPGRADES
Opportunities for long-term development, including multi-skilled progression and potential electrical certification (where aligned to competencies).
Key Responsibilities

Instrument Maintenance & Fault-Finding
- Manage real-time monitoring of gas flows, pressures, temperatures and levels
- Calibrate & repair transmitters, analysers, valves, controls
- Diagnose & resolve faults in critical system instrumentation

Site Operations & Compliance
- Travel to support AGI sites and gas transmission assets
- Work within permit-to-work and safe systems of work protocols
- Contribute to inspection, testing and commissioning activities

Emergency & On-Call Support
- Participate in a 1-in-4 standby rota assisting fault responses or emergencies

Process Optimisation
- Provide technical feedback on asset integrity and reliability improvements
Essential Experience & Qualifications
✅ Instrumentation Focus:
- Time-served apprenticeship or recognised EC&I training scheme
- Level 3 qualification (e.g., BTEC, City & Guilds, NVQ/SVQ in Instrumentation)
- Explicit maintenance & fault diagnosis experience within Oil & Gas or industrial process environments
✅ Safety & Compliance:
- Practical hands-on experience working in hazardous areas
- Strong understanding of instrumentation systems, control logic and relevant legislation
- Experience with permit-to-work systems and safe working methods
- Full UK driving licence (mandatory due to travel requirements)
✅ Personal Attributes:
- Willingness to perform a payable 1-in-4 on-call rota
Desirable (Advance Preferred)
👉 Experience with:
- Safety-related and control instrumentation logic operation
- COMPEX Ex01–04 certification
- BS7671 (18th Edition) or electrical/comms disciplines (e.g., C&G 2391/2377)
