Operations Technician – Instrumentation (Electrical / Instrumentation & Cyber)
Location: Avonbridge Salary: £44,642 – £52,519 + up to 6% bonus, overtime and standby allowance
About The Role
We’re looking for an Operations Technician (Electrical / Instrumentation & Cyber) to join our team, playing a key role in maintaining and protecting critical infrastructure.
This is not a traditional IT cyber role. Instead, you’ll work hands-on with Operational Technology (OT), supporting the performance, reliability, and security of systems that underpin essential gas transmission operations.
You’ll be primarily based at Avonbridge Compressor Station, with regular travel to surrounding operational sites as part of your day-to-day role.
This position is ideal for someone with an Instrumentation background who is looking to develop into the growing and highly sought-after field of cybersecurity within industrial environments.
Responsibilities
- Maintaining and supporting instrumentation, control systems, and cyber/OT assets across multiple operational sites
- Working with PLCs, SCADA systems, industrial PCs, firewalls, and network infrastructure
- Supporting the implementation of cybersecurity controls to protect critical systems
- Carrying out routine maintenance, inspections, and fault-finding
- Investigating and resolving equipment failures, engaging contractors where required
- Collaborating with central cyber teams to ensure system compliance, resilience, and readiness
- Supporting cyber assurance visits, upgrades, and vulnerability management activities
- Assisting with installation of new equipment and secure disposal of retired assets
- Taking part in a standby rota following training

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
