Ready to make a splash? Join our team today.
We have an exciting opportunity for an Operations Technician to join our team supporting vital water services across the beautiful Isles of Scilly.
In this varied, hands-on role, you'll help deliver high-quality water services to island communities, working mainly on St Mary's, with travel to other islands as required. You'll be part of a small, close-knit team where flexibility, strong communication and teamwork are essential.
After 12 months, you'll have the opportunity to progress onto our Operator Progression Scheme, increasing your salary by up to £3,100, reflecting your growing skills, knowledge and flexibility. You'll also receive monthly standby and call-out payments.
What you'll be doing:
As an Operations Technician, you'll play a key role in ensuring safe, reliable water services across the islands. Your responsibilities will include:
- Monitoring and managing raw water sources to ensure they are optimised for island supply
- Operating and maintaining water (and, in future, wastewater) treatment processes in line with operating procedures and best practice
- Carrying out proactive and reactive maintenance across all islands to maintain a continuous supply of high-quality water
- Repairing and replacing network assets, responding to bursts and emergencies, and ensuring hygiene standards are always met
- Installing, replacing and reading water meters
- Calibrating instrumentation used in treatment and network processes, recording data, analysing consumption trends and identifying potential leakage
- Using handheld devices and online systems to monitor network performance and support fault diagnosis
- Communicating clearly and professionally with customers and stakeholders, ensuring issues are logged, escalated and resolved effectively
- Working collaboratively with colleagues, management and the Engineering team to support investment and develop new solutions for the islands
- Maintaining tools, equipment and consumables in line with inventory requirements
- Participating in a standby rota
- Undertaking grounds maintenance, including strimming and general site repairs

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
