Operator – Inverness, Permanent

About the Role

Working as part of the Inverness operations team, you’ll support the safe, efficient, and uninterrupted operation of the Petroleum Supply Depot (PSD), pipelines, and associated facilities. This permanent role involves:

  • Controlling plant operations
  • Managing fuel movements
  • Supporting maintenance activities
  • Ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards

The position starts on core hours but will transition to a 24-hour shift pattern, with participation in an on-call rota.


Key Responsibilities

  • Daily Operations & SCADA Systems

    • Set up, monitor, and control pumping routes
    • Safely receive, deliver, and manage inter-site movements of product using site route cards
    • Approved Inspector of Fuel Quality, including:
      • Ensuring product and additive integrity
      • Maintaining stock control (tank dipping, temperature correction, batch recording, monthly accounting)
  • PC-Based Operations

    • Operate and maintain efficiency in SCADA and ABB systems
  • Housekeeping & Equipment Maintenance

    • Maintain high standards of cleanliness, facility upkeep, and equipment functionality
  • Safety & Compliance

    • Issue and monitor Permits to Work for colleagues and contractors
    • Conduct pre-planned proof checks on equipment and systems
    • Assist maintenance teams as needed
  • Incident & Defect Reporting

    • Report defects, hazards, near misses, and issues as soon as possible
    • Participate in the duty standby rota, including overnight callouts
  • Pipeline & Third-Party Oversight

    • Monitor and maintain pipeline wayleave, including vegetation control, custodianship, and minor mechanical maintenance
    • Increase to third-party work site visits (planning, performance checks)
    • Compile and issue reports for infringements, line walks, and site audits

  • Aerial Patrol Reporting
    • Document findings from regular aerial patrols

About You

To thrive in this role, you’ll have:

  • ** Essential Criteria**

    • GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English
    • A full UK driving licence (valid for multiple vehicle categories is advantageous)
    • Previous experience in a regulated or safety-critical industry (e.g. hazmat handling, fuel storage, or pipeline operations)
    • Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team
    • Strong attention to detail and willingness to follow strict procedures
    • Excellent communication and prioritisation skills
    • Proactive and safety-driven mindset
  • ** Advantageous Skills**

    • Prior experience in fuel handling or pipeline operations
    • Knowledge of COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards) or COSHH regulations
