Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to join our enthusiastic, patient-focused, and motivated team in the Lymington Eye Outpatients department.
About the Role
Lymington Eye Outpatients provides a comprehensive ophthalmology outpatient service across the New Forest and surrounding areas. You will deliver high-quality diagnostic imaging, support specialist ophthalmic services, and work alongside colleagues including consultants, optometrists, nurses, orthoptists, and administrative staff.
The multidisciplinary team operates Monday to Friday (08:00–18:00) at Lymington New Forest Hospital, with potential deployment at the Southampton Eye Unit, Southampton General Hospital as required.

Main Responsibilities
Core Tasks
As an Ophthalmic Imaging Technician, your responsibilities include:
- Performing specialised ophthalmic imaging and diagnostics (as detailed below)
- Supporting consultant-led outpatient and virtual clinics
- Producing high-quality diagnostic images for clinical interpretation
- Delivering compassionate, patient-centred care
- Collaborating efficiently with the multidisciplinary team to streamline clinic workflows
- Driving innovation through service improvement and quality assurance initiatives
Key Imaging and Diagnostic Procedures
Core duties include mastering:
- Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
- Colour Fundus Photography of retina and optic discs
- Humphrey Visual Field Testing
- Ocular Biometry and Corneal Topography
- Specular Microscopy (corneal examination)
- Auto-refraction (where clinically appropriate)
- Assisting clinicians during intraocular/laser treatments
- Visual Acuity Assessment
- Intraocular Pressure Measurement
- Instilling dilating drops per Trust policy
- Onboarding and training new team members

Essential Criteria
Qualifications and Experience
- Science A-Level or equivalent qualification (or comparable certifications)
- Hands-on experience in ophthalmic imaging or equivalent roles with Level 4 Diploma knowledge
- **Detailed understanding of eye anatomy, physiology, and common hepatomic **[ patholog?eye] conditions
- In-depth knowledge of the visual pathway and its relevance to visual field defects in pathologies
- Full proficiency and certification in:
- Working with Humphrey Visual Field analyser
- Retinal imaging (automated/manually) using fundus cameras and software tools
- Information required: Fundus Cameras software programs

Technical and Practical Skills
- Strong communication skills, including explaining exams to hard of hearing patients/wider-care barriers
- A methodical approach to jobs due to prolonged attention requirements
- Exceptional hand-eye dexterity, especially in fine-tuning imaging/clinical equipment
- High pressure tolerance while achieving set performance goals and patient targets
- Ability to support patients in wheelchairs in confined spaces
- Ability to perform tasks under low-light conditions
- Corrected visual acuity (≥20/40 or equivalence) to screen and focus diagnostic images
Soft Skills and Work Environment Fit
- Work autonomously and under time-driven environments
- Contribute to multidisciplinary teams to enhance service quality
Desirable Criteria
- Experience with Octopus Perimeter
- Management experience at a relevant tier
- Leadership in building strong working relationships across clinical teams
- Prior teaching or supervision experience
- Proficiency in image manipulation/graphic editing software
