Retail Assistant → Boots Opticians
About the Role
As a Retail Assistant, you’ll be a key part of our Boots Opticians store team, often being the first and last face our customers see. On the shop floor, you’ll build strong relationships with customers by listening to their needs and guiding them to the right products or services—whether that’s helping with an eye-test, finding the perfect eyewear, or ensuring smooth ordering, dispensing, and collection of glasses or contact lenses.
No day will be the same here. You’ll play a hands-on role in pre-screening, eye-test support, aftercare (repairs and adjustments), and operational tasks. Plus, you’ll grow with ‘Step Into Optics’, our industry-leading training programme that combines workshops and practical on-the-job learning to develop your skills.
Your time: based in store, reporting directly to the store manager.
Responsibilities
- Customer interaction: Greet, engage, and guide customers—from arrival to aftercare
- Technical support:
- Assist with eye-tests and pre-screening activities
- Order, dispense, and collect glasses/contact lenses
- Provide adjustments and repairs for existing prescriptions
- Operational tasks:
- Administrative duties linked to dispensing and prescription management
- Maintaining shop floor standards for a clean, organised environment
- Team collaboration: Work closely with team members under store leadership

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
