Job Title: OR Circulator Registered Nurse (Full-Time)
About the Role
The role of OR Circulator Registered Nurse involves delivering high-quality patient care across the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of surgical procedures. This position requires strong nursing expertise, adherence to protocols, and a high level of communication to ensure seamless surgical case management while maintaining a safe, compliant, and patient-centered environment.
Essential Functions
- Implement the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, evaluation, patient outcomes) for surgical patients.
- Provide direct patient care in preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative settings.
- Ensure safe and efficient surgical case counting, aseptic technique, and patient identification verification.
- Communicate effectively with the surgical team and verdes continuity of care.
- Maintain accurate, legible patient documentation with proper signature.
- Anticipate surgeon/facility needs during surgical procedures.
- Collaborate with nursing and medical staff to establish and revise plans of care.
- Ensure patient/family understanding of procedures and related risks.
Supervision Received
Supervised by the Supervisor of Clinical Services.
Education & Experience Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) License
- Current certifications:
- American Heart Association BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Clinical Expertise:
- Maintains current, comprehensive knowledge of nursing standards, JCAHO regulations, Nurse Practice Act, and Patient Bill of Rights.
- Assesses physiological and psychosocial health and pain levels as per policy.
- Drafts and updates patient histories and plans of care.

Communication & Care Coordination:
- Verbally reports pertinent surgical information to ensure seamless care transitions.
- Verifies patient identification before surgery and surgical site marking.
- Anticipates surgical team needs during procedures.

Technical Proficiency:
- Demonstrates efficient surgical room turnover while adhering to infection control (aseptic techniques).
- Proficiency in handling blood products according to strict protocols.
- Ability to count surgical supplies accurately for case validation.

Safety & Compliance:
- Acts within legal/ethical guidelines (e.g., Nurse Practice Act, ANA Code for Nurses).
- Monitors and adjusts patient care based on clinical updates.
- Ensures adherence to infection control, risk management, and patient safety guidelines.

- Participates in a professional nursing organization.
- Maintains open communication with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and ancillary teams.

Physical Demands
Tight organisational skills, clear priority setting, excellent time management, and proactively implementing corrective measures to problem scenarios. Approximately 66–100% standing, 66–100% walking, 0–25 lbs carrying. 0–5 lbs often requires bending, squatting, reaching overhead. Frequent ambient noise exposure (medical equipment, telephones, motors, etc.). Must demonstrate nosiness, awareness, flexibility, and adaptability in fast-paced environment.

- Frequent exposure to stress, odors, and medical dust.
Environmental Conditions
- Indoor Work: Approximately 95–100% of the time.
- Occasional noise exposure (operating room machinery, sharps handlers, telephones).
- Humidity, climate-controlled rooms, or frequent attire adjustments.
- Occasional Exposure:
- Environmental hazards: Brief interaction with communicable diseases, electricity, or procedural hazards. personnel protective equipment (PPE) provided: masks, gowns, gloves, head coverings.
- Factors common in operating rooms:
- Radiation (occasional)
- Minor gas fumes/disrelated sterilization
- Fluorescent lighting and disinfectants may affect odor threshold tolerance.
Note: All duties require reasonable physical strength, martial fitness, and durability to maintain efficiency during fast-paced surgical cases.
