About the Role
The role can be performed remote or hybrid, depending on location.
We are seeking a highly capable Oracle Database Application and Support Team Lead who balances hands-on technical expertise with leadership and mentorship responsibilities. This role provides support to 100+ customer environments, including high-profile Public Sector organisations, across on-premises, private, and public cloud platforms.
This is a technical lead position—you will engage directly in:
- Database administration
- Troubleshooting
- Upgrades
- Application support
Responsibilities
⚡ Hands-On Technical Responsibilities
- Function as a senior technical engineer for Oracle Database platforms and related application stacks.
- Perform and lead Oracle Database upgrades, patching, and software deployments across customer environments.
- Conduct 3rd-line diagnostics and fault resolution, including:
- Performance tuning
- Data recovery
- Backup failures
- Application connectivity issues
- Proactively monitor capacity, performance, backup metrics, and implement corrective actions before issues impact customers.
- Ensure robust backup, recovery, and restore solutions with a focus on improving operational effectiveness.
- Lead technical input during major incidents, conducting root cause analysis and implementing preventative fixes.
- Maintain and improve technical documentation, runbooks, and support procedures.
Leadership & Guidance
- Serve as the primary technical escalation point for complex Oracle and application-related issues.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (e.g., analysts, cloud operations) to provide real-time technical direction.
- Establish and promote technical standards and best practices in database administration and application support.
- Review and quality-check technical changes before implementation.
- Develop team capability through mentoring, knowledge sharing, and coaching.

🗣 Customer & Stakeholder Engagement
- Engage directly with customers as the technical lead, scheduling work and balancing competing priorities.
- Translate complex technical challenges into clear explanations for customers and stakeholders.
- Provide technical recommendations on stability, performance, resilience, and upgrade planning.
Automation & Continuous Improvement
- Identify operational inefficiencies and drive improvements:
- Scripted maintenance
- Automated health checks
- Standardised deployments and upgrades
- Work with Networks, UNIX/Linux, Cloud Ops, and Application teams to resolve cross-platform issues.
- Reduce manual effort, enhance reliability, and optimise customer satisfaction.
Qualifications
Essential Skills / Experience
- Proven hands-on experience with Oracle Database administration, including: Single-instance environments | Patching and upgrades
- Direct support for local government customers using revenues/bpayments or housing solutions.
- Strong experience administering Oracle on Linux/Solaris (Windows experience is a plus).
- Hands-on Apache Tomcat-based application deployment and support.
- Experience in live customer environments providing production support.
- Practical use of ITSM tools (e.g., Ivanti, ServiceNow, or similar).
- Ability to remain technically hands-on while guiding junior staff.
- Exceptional customer communication skills across video, phone, and email.
- Eligibility for UK Security Clearance.
Desirable Skills / Experience
- Oracle certifications (an advantage).
- Experience with Apache Web Server configuration and support.
- Unix/Linux shell scripting for automation.
- Implementing scripted database/application backup and recovery processes.
- Deep knowledge of networking concepts relevant to database and application support.
- Expertise in producing technical documentation and supporting runbooks.
