Oracle Site Reliability Engineer – Job Description (Knutsford, Barclays)
Purpose of the Role
To apply software engineering techniques, automation, and best practices in incident response, ensuring the reliability, availability, and scalability of systems, platforms, and technology.
Key Accountabilities
Core Responsibilities
- Ensure availability, performance, and scalability of systems and services through proactive monitoring, maintenance, and capacity planning.
- Lead resolution, analysis, and response to system outages and disruptions, implementing measures to prevent recurring incidents.
- Develop tools, scripts, and automation to streamline operational processes, enhancing efficiency and system resilience.
- Monitor and optimize system performance and resource usage, identifying and addressing bottlenecks while implementing best practices for performance tuning.
- Collaborate with development teams to integrate reliability, scalability, and performance best practices into the software development lifecycle.
- Stay updated on industry technology trends, contributing to the organization’s technical excellence and growth.

- Advise and influence decision-making, contribute to policy development, and ensure operational effectiveness.
- Collaborate closely with business functions/divisions to drive systemic improvements.

Technical & Functional Requirements
Essential Skills & Experience
- Demonstrated expertise in Oracle Database administration (concepts) and PL/SQL development.
- Ability to write, optimize, troubleshoot, and maintain multi-layered SQL queries, stored procedures, packages, functions, and high-performance database code.
- Deep understanding of Oracle architecture, including performance tuning, backup/recovery, and high availability solutions (e.g., Oracle RAC, Data Guard, GoldenGate, ASM).
- Bash/Shell scripting and Python proficiency for automation, monitoring, and operational assignments.
- Experience designing automated solutions to improve reliability, reduce manual effort, and achieve operational excellence.
- Familiarity with Git/Bitbucket for source control and version management.
- Practical knowledge of Jira for Agile delivery, change management, incident tracking, and sprint execution.
- CI/CD fundamentals for database change deployment and orchestration.

Highly Valued Additional Qualifications
- Ansible experience (configuration management, operational automation).
- Expertise in enterprise observability/platforms (Oracle Enterprise Manager, Splunk, Elastic/Observability, Grafana, Prometheus).
- Strong root cause analysis (RCA), incident management, and production troubleshooting skills.
- Oracle-specific skills (ASM, RAC, GoldenGate, disaster recovery).
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (OCI, AWS, Azure) and modern Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices (e.g., reliability engineering, capacity planning, service resilience).
