About The Role
As an OT Solutions Architect, you will play a critical role in designing and delivering secure, scalable Operational Technology (OT) solutions for some of the UK’s most significant critical national infrastructure programmes.
Based within our Industrial Automation & Control Systems practice, you’ll collaborate with engineering, cybersecurity and client teams to define end-to-end solutions across security, infrastructure, networking, hybrid hosting and IT/OT convergence.
Senior, client-facing responsibilities include:
- Working across multiple programmes
- Engaging with business stakeholders, technical specialists and delivery teams
- Translating operational requirements into technical solutions
- Balancing strategic architecture with practical delivery
- Ensuring solutions are secure, resilient and enterprise-aligned, while meeting operational demands of live environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end OT solution architecture across complex programmes and projects.
- Partner with business teams to Understand needs and Translate into technical designs.
- Design secure architectures covering:
- Institutional infrastructure
- Networking frameworks
- Hybrid hosting
- IT/OT integration
- Produce high-quality architecture diagrams, design documentation and technical briefs (for both technical and non-technical audiences).
- Align solutions with enterprise standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., operational resilience).
- Chair technical design reviews, providing architectural guidance to delivery teams.
- Evaluate technologies/platforms and assess supplier capabilities to support programme objectives.
- Support procurement activities by defining technical requirements and reviewing supplier proposals.
- Collaborate with engineering and cybersecurity teams to resolve design and implementation challenges.
- Contribute to architecture governance, industry standards and Sword’s solution patterns.

Your Profile & Experience
Essential Requirements
- Proven experience in OT/IACS solution architecture (e.g., SCADA, control systems, industrial networking).
- In-depth knowledge of Operational Technology, including:
- SCADA
- Industrial automation
- Distributed control systems
- Remote operational environments
- Experience designing and delivering secure, scalable, resilient OT architectures.
- Hands-on understanding of:
- Networking (real-time systems, redundancy)
- Infrastructure (virtualisation, cloud support)
- Converged models (IT/OT integration)
- Familiarity with cloud environments (e.g., Azure, AWS).
- Ability to work across both high-level wargaming and granular technical specifications.
- Strong communication skills for:
- Stakeholder engagement
- Clarifying complex concepts
- Producing accessible designs for non-technical audiences.
Desirable (but not essential)
- Technical experience in energy, utilities, renewables, oil & gas or similar critical infrastructure sectors.
- Knowledge of security technologies:
- Identity & Access Management (IAM)
- SIEM
- Remote access solutions
- Awareness of frameworks such as:
- IEC 62443
- NCSC Cyber Assessment Framework
- NIS/NIS2 Regulations
- Experience with architecture modelling tools (Bizzdesign, Archi).
- TOGAF certification or equivalent methodology understanding.
- Consultancy experience including agile and waterfall delivery methodologies.
