A leading provider of business technology solutions within the Energy, Public, and Finance Sectors, Sword drives transformational change within our clients, leveraging proven technology, specialist teams, and domain expertise to build robust foundations across platforms, data, and business applications. Rooted in using technology to solve complex business challenges, we partner with our clients to help them achieve their strategic goals.
About the Role
As an OT Solutions Architect, your role will be fundamental in designing secure, scalable Operational Technology (OT) solutions that underpin some of the UK’s most critical national infrastructure programmes.
Based within Sword’s Industrial Automation & Control Systems (IACS) practice, you will work collaboratively with engineering, cybersecurity, and client teams to:
- Define end-to-end OT solutions across security, infrastructure, networking, hybrid hosting, and IT/OT convergence.
- Act as a trusted adviser, balancing strategic architectural direction with practical delivery to ensure solutions are secure, resilient, supportable, and aligned with enterprise standards while meeting operational demands.
This is a senior, high-impact role, requiring you to engage across multiple programmes, engaging with technical specialists, business stakeholders, and delivery teams. You will align on requirements, shape comprehensive architectural frameworks, and guide seamless implementation.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead end-to-end solution architecture across OT programmes and projects.
- Collaborate with business stakeholders to define requirements and articulate secure, scalable technical solutions.
- Design OT architectures covering:
- Infrastructure
- Networking
- Hybrid hosting models
- Cybersecurity
- IT/OT integration
- Produce high-quality design artefacts, including architecture diagrams and detailed technical documentation tailored for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ensure alignment with enterprise architecture principles, operational needs, and industry standards.
- Chair and lead technical design reviews, providing hands-on architectural consulting throughout the delivery lifecycle.
- Evaluate technologies (hardware, software, platforms, and vendors) to support programme objectives, including cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS).
- Define technical procurement specifications and review supplier proposals to mitigate risk.
- Partner with cross-functional teams (engineering, infrastructure, cybersecurity) to resolve technical challenges during implementation.
- Drive architectural governance, refine technical standards, and refine solution patterns within the IACS practice.
- Strike the balance between strategic roadmaps and short-term delivery—ensuring solutions evolve and meet today’s operational needs.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
