At 5 News, we deliver distinctive programmes and exclusive stories, putting people at the heart of our storytelling. As an OutputProducer, you’ll play a key role in our newsroom, where your creativity and editorial skills will be supported and developed.
About the Role
We’re looking for a strong, ambitious journalist who can identify stories relevant to our audience and present them in innovative and engaging ways.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Producing high-quality TV packages and engaging live segments
- Writing scripts, lead-ins, headlines and ensuring accuracy through subbing
- Editing video, selecting strong soundbites, and developing compelling narratives
- Creating custom graphics to enrich packages and live segments
- Managing 5 News phone segments, curating viewer comments, and collaborating with editors and presenters
- Using social media to amplify content for maximum audience engagement
- Collaborating with reporters and correspondents on digital content
- Generating new story ideas for TV and digital formats
- Producing short bulletins (day, evenings, weekends) and responding to breaking news
- Overseeing gallery production during transmission and managing pre-recorded elements
- Logging and sourcing pictures/still images
- Occasionally deputising as Digital Producer and assisting on locations

Key Responsibilities
Your core duties will include:
- TV Production: Crafting high-quality packages and live segments
- Writing for TV: Scriptwriting, lead-ins, headlines, and subbing for accuracy
- Video Editing: Selecting strong visuals and soundbites in Avid/equivalent software
- Graphics: Designing and executing creative templates for packages and live slots
- 5 Phone Segments: Curating viewer comments and working with presenters/editors
- Social Media: Amplifying 5 News content across platforms for engagement
- Digital Production: Assisting reporters/correspondents with tailored digital content
- Story Development: Pitching new ideas for TV and digital outputs
- Bulletin Production: Writing/scripting and picture-editing for short bulletins
- Gallery Support: Monitoring breaking news, ensuring on-air readiness for bulletins
- Pictures Management: Sourcing, logging, and distributing visuals as required
- Additional Roles: Covering deadlines, deputising for other roles, and working on locations
Key Requirements
We require:
✅ Proven news/current affairs experience with a strong editorial eye ✅ Exceptional attention to detail and rigorous fact-checking for high standards ✅ Creativity & initiative—able to spot stories, tell them clearly, and with fresh perspectives ✅ Prior experience using Avid (or similar) for video editing ✅ Previous output production experience is preferred but not essential ✅ Sharp news judgment with the ability to make confident, decisive choices ✅ A strong visual sense for selecting impactful pictures and creating effective graphics ✅ Excellent writing skills for scripts, headlines, and digital storytelling ✅ Technical adaptability—comfortable with evolving newsroom tools and workflows ✅ Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate, lead, and manage teams ✅ Calm under pressure, with flexibility in a fast-moving news environment ✅ Clear understanding of TV vs digital storytelling and expectations for each platform ✅ Ability to meet deadlines without compromising editorial quality ✅ Confidence in editorial meetings, able to persuade and assert authority ✅ **Deep knowledge of **ITN Compliance Manual and Ofcom broadcasting standards
