Outreach Tutor

1:1 Outreach Tutor – Clacton-on-Sea (Essex) & Surrounding Areas

Role Type: 1:1 Outreach Tutor | Location: Face-to-face (Child’s home, local library, or community centre) Base: Tuition Hub in Clacton-on-Sea Hours: Part-time or full-time

  • Most referrals: 10–15 hours per week
  • Full-time tutors support multiple students Start Date: As soon as possible (ASAP) Subjects: English & Maths (Primary & GCSE levels)

About the Role

1st Staff is a nationally recognised Alternative Provision provider, delivering holistic therapeutic and educational support for children and young people (aged 4-25) who struggle in mainstream education due to:

  • SEN (Special Educational Needs)
  • SEMH (Social Emotional Mental Health needs)
  • Challenging behaviour
  • Risk of permanent exclusions

We are seeking dedicated 1:1 tutors for Clacton-on-Sea and surrounding Essex areas.

As a tutor, you will deliver personalised, engaging, and supportive learning sessions to young people in close collaboration with Local Authorities. This role suits individuals who are: ✔ Patient, caring, and emotionally resilient ✔ Passionate about building trust with young people ✔ Committed to making a positive difference in their education

Previous experience as a Teacher, Teaching Assistant, Tutor, or Mentor is highly desirable but not mandatory.


Responsibilities

  • Assess students’ academic levels and needs to develop tailored, personalised lesson plans.
  • Plan and deliver engaging, one-to-one lessons using evidence-based tutoring techniques.
  • Engage students who may have difficulties focusing, communicate effectively, or struggle with SEN/SEMH.
  • Monitor and report progress with clear, actionable feedback for schools and parents.
  • Adapt teaching methods to suit different learning styles, abilities, and emotional needs.
  • Maintain a safe, nurturing, and motivating learning environment for each student.
  • Work collaboratively with schools, Local Authority teams, and our hub tutors in Clacton.

Requirements

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • +Previous experience supporting young people in an educational environment (tutoring, teaching, mentoring, community work).
  • Ability to work effectively with students with SEN/SEMH and challenging behaviours.
  • Strong communication skills – ability to explain complex concepts clearly.
  • Confidence in adapting lessons for varying abilities and emotional needs.
  • Patience, empathy, and strong rapport-building skills.
  • Flexibility to adjust plans based on student responses.
  • Ability to plan structured, engaging sessions.

Preferred Skills:

  • First Aid certification (desirable but not mandatory).
  • Experience with therapeutic or trauma-informed approaches (strongly beneficial).
  • Access to reliable transport (for visiting students’ homes/libraries).

Other Critical Criteria:

  • Enhanced DBS Check required for all successful applicants.
  • Willingness to complete annual safeguarding training.
