Job Description
Hitachi Rail is recruiting for Overhaul & Modifications Technicians at our state-of-the-art train maintenance centre in Doncaster. You’ll work diagnosing, repairing, and optimising Class 80x series rolling stock across both corrective & preventative maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
- Scheduled Overhaul & Maintenance:
- Conduct overhaul activities on Class 80x rolling stock as per maintenance plans and delivery schedules.
- Modification & Upgrades:
- Implement modifications to enhance fleet performance while reducing downtime.
- Technical Excellence & Compliance:
- Troubleshoot electrical/mechanical faults, rectify repairs, and improve processes.
- Ensure adherence to health & safety protocols and internal/external regulations.
- Update the Maintenance Management System (MMS) accurately to track tasks and generate reports.
- Supporting Operations:
- Assist with new train deliveries and maintenance acceptance processes.
- Collaborate with Team Leaders & Managers to meet production targets.
- Training & Development:
- Complete mandatory training courses and upskill in specialised areas.
- Travel & Flexibility:
- Be prepared for occasional overnight travel for depot-specific tasks.

Required Skills & Qualifications
Experience & Competences
- Worked in a modern engineering environment, preferably in railway or high-precision maintenance.
- Strong safety awareness, including COSHH, working at heights, and plant operations.
- Proficient with fault diagnosis techniques using manuals, schematics, and diagnostic tools.
- Knowledge of Maintenance Management Systems (MMS).
Education
- NVQ Level 3 in an engineering discipline or
- HNC in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or
- Completed a relevant engineering apprenticeship.
Personal Attributes (Behavioural)
- Teamwork autonomy: Effective working independently or collaboratively.
- Regulatory compliance: Sound knowledge of internal and external regulations.
- Professionalism: Ability to represent Hitachi in high-pressure situations.
- Analytical skills: Investigating complex faults and documenting reports with clarity.
- Communication: Strong written and verbal English to interact across organisational levels.
- Resilience: Calmness and diplomacy under pressure.
Desirable Additional Skills & Licences
- Experience in modifications and overhaul activities on railway rolling stock.
- Intermediate IT skills (Microsoft Office Suite: Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Outlook).
- Ability to read electrical/pneumatic/mechanical schematics.
- Technical certifications:
- Fire Warden, First Responder
- UK full driving licence
- Depot-specific competences: Manual Handling, Bogie drop/press, Cranes, Bogie Jacks.
- Professional Safety Expertise: Lifting Operations, Asbestos Awareness.
